Austin fires goal warning to Blackburn Rovers
FORMER Burnley striker Charlie Austin has warned Blackburn Rovers that QPR have found their shooting boots.
The Hoops go into tomorrow’s Loftus Road clash with former Premier League rivals Rovers on the back of a 3-0 win at home to Bournemouth on Tuesday.
It was the first time this season that Harry Redknapp’s second-placed side have scored three goals in a game and ensured they bounced back from their shock 2-1 loss at Doncaster Rovers last weekend.
But top-scorer Austin, a £4m summer arrival from Burnley, reckons the result had been coming.
“Everyone has kept saying we’ve not had to get out of first gear so this has been a long time coming,” said Austin, who set the Hoops on their way to victory over Bournemouth.
“To score three goals and keep another clean sheet against a good Bournemouth side is credit to the lads.
“It was massively important for us to bounce back from Saturday’s defeat – I think people were wondering how we’d react – but we showed what we’re made of.
“Like I said, a performance like that has been coming for a long, long time.
“We’ve not had the rub of the green in front of goal in certain games but it’s all about winning games and we’ve made a decent start, losing only twice all season.
“We showed what we can do when everything clicks into place and that’s very pleasing.”
Austin’s strike against the Cherries means he has netted nine of the 22 goals that the Hoops have scored in the Championship.
“I’m here to score goals and help this club win football matches so when that happens I’m obviously delighted,” said Austin, who has 10 goals in total for the term. “I’m into double figures now for the season which is pleasing but there’s still a lot more to come from me and the lads.”
Former Rovers winger Junior Hoilett was also on target in the win over Bournemouth.
Hoilett scored 14 goals in 67 appearances for Rovers before leaving for QPR in the summer of 2012.
Hoops boss Redknapp said: “It was important we got back to winning ways after a disappointing result on Saturday.
“Saturday was probably the only disappointing day since the season started.
“We had to pick ourselves up and we were excellent. We deserved the win and it was a good all-round performance.”
