MATCH-winner Tommy Spurr says the vital victory over his hometown team Leeds United has set Blackburn Rovers up perfectly for one of the biggest weeks of their season so far.

With confidence restored Spurr, whose strike on the stroke of half-time settled Saturday’s War of the Roses clash, sees no reason why Rovers cannot take at least a point at play-off rivals Ipswich Town tomorrow.

And if they get a positive result from the long trip to East Anglia the Leeds-born left-back believes they will be able to take the game to title-challenging QPR at Loftus Road on Saturday.

“I’m buzzing to get the goal but the main thing for us was to get the three points,” said Spurr after the 1-0 success over the Whites.

“They have moved us a little closer to the top six and set ourselves up for a big week.

“If we can go to Ipswich on Tuesday and get something there it will allow us to have a right good go at QPR.

“There’s no reason why we can’t go there and beat them.

“Doncaster have beat them today and that shows anything can happen in this league.

“We know on our day we can beat anyone.”

After scoring the only goal of the game Spurr played his part as resilient Rovers resisted everything Leeds – who were chasing a fourth straight win – could throw at them in the second half.

For all their pressure the Whites never once went close to equalising as Gary Bowyer’s men made it five clean sheets in their last six home games.

“The gaffer and his staff work hard with us as a unit and the hard work we’re putting in throughout the week is really showing, especially at home,” said Sheffield Wednesday fan Spurr, who has family and friends who are Leeds supporters.

“We do two sessions, one on a Tuesday and one on a Thursday, on defending, on being close to each other, covering each other and one on ones.

“We all know what we’re doing and on a Saturday it means we can help each other and get each other out of trouble.”

It was Spurr’s first goal at Ewood Park and his second for the club after signing on a free transfer from Championship rivals Doncaster.

The 26-year-old has not missed a league game and is regarded as one of the best pieces of business Rovers boss Bowyer did in the summer.

Bowyer said: “He’s been a fantastic signing for a free transfer.

“He’s been top drawer. You know exactly what you’re going to get and fans love him because of that.

“His performances have been very, very consistent for us and we're delighted for him.

“We’ve encouraged him to score more goals and he always gives us a good celebration when he scores!”
