FULL TIME: Wigan Athletic 2 Blackburn Rovers 1
5:06pm Sunday 6th October 2013 in Sport
TEN-MAN Blackburn Rovers were unable to hang on to a half-time lead as they were beaten at Wigan Athletic.
Tommy Spurr fired Rovers in front in the eighth minute after Wigan goalkeeper Scott Carson spilled a Tom Cairney free kick.
The Latics, despite dominating possession, did not look like threatening an equaliser until Hanley was red-carded in the 31st minute for allegedly lashing out at Nick Powell in an off-the-ball incident.
With their tails up, Wigan would have levelled the contest had it not been for fine saves from Jake Kean to deny Jordi Gomez and Powell.
Four minutes before the break Rovers boss Gary Bowyer replaced Leon Best with Lee Williamson.
Williamson moved into centre midfield with Jason Lowe dropping back to partner full debutant Matt Kilgallon in the heart of the Rovers defence.
But Wigan came from behind to claim all three points after the interval.
Substitute Grant Holt levelled the match in the 69th minute when he bundled in Gomez’s corner.
Owen Coyle’s side then claimed the winner in the 90th minute when another substitute, Emmerson Boyce, flicked home Ben Watson’s free kick.
Rovers boss Gary Bowyer said: “I’ve got nothing but credit for my players.
“If anybody has ever questioned our spirit, today we proved we have got it in abundance.”
