HALF-TIME: Wigan Athletic 0 Blackburn Rovers 1
ROVERS lead at half-time thanks to Tommy Spurr’s first goal for the club – but they will play close to an hour with 10 men after stand-in skipper Grant Hanley was sent off.
Spurr fired Rovers in front in the eighth minute after Wigan goalkeeper Scott Carson spilled a Tom Cairney free kick.
Wigan, despite dominating possession, did not look like threatening an equaliser until Hanley was red-carded in the 31st minute for allegedly lashing out at Nick Powell in an off-the-ball incident.
With their tails up, the Latics would have levelled the contest had it not been for fine saves from Jake Kean to deny Jordi Gomez and Powell.
Four minutes before the break Rovers boss Gary Bowyer replaced Leon Best with Lee Williamson.
Williamson moved into centre midfield with Jason Lowe dropping back to partner full-debutant Matt Kilgallon in the heart of the Rovers defence.
