Appleton: Rovers must cope with 'white hot atmosphere' at Millwall

MICHAEL Appleton knows all about the dangers of entering the ‘Lions Den’ and knows his squad will have to keep calm heads if they are to give their long-suffering fans something to cheer.

Rovers travel to Millwall tomorrow in an FA Cup quarter final, with Wembley just 90 minutes away for the winner, and Appleton is expecting a “white hot” atmosphere to be awaiting his side.

The Rovers boss was sent off in his first ever appearance at the Den as a player, in a 1-0 win for Preston back in 1998, and will be urging his players to cope better with the expected intimidating welcome.

Appleton said: “My first appearance at the Den I ended up getting sent off. That was my first sending off, we won the game 1-0 though.

“I remember going into the dressing room and I didn’t know what to do. I phoned my dad and said ‘I've been sent off what do I do?’, he said ‘keep your mouth shut and take it on the chin’. It was for retaliation.

“That is the message I have passed on to the players because we are going into the ‘Lions Den’. They do passionately get behind their team and it is an intimidating atmosphere.

“It is going to be a white hot atmosphere on the day and we have to make sure we are fully committed but we have to make sure we don’t lose our composure. That will be crucial.”With Rovers struggling in the Championship and the club’s supporters having suffered some disappointing times in recent years, Appleton knows how important reaching a Wembley semi-final could be for all concerned.

“I have never had a Wembley experience and I don’t need reminding,” said Appleton. “I have had a couple of play-off semi final defeats. A play-off semi with Preston and one with West Brom.

“You can tell how big the game is by the atmosphere in training today. There is a spring in the step, a steely focus. It is a great opportunity to put the league to bed for a couple of weeks and make sure we are fully focused on Millwall.

“The rewards of getting through the game are that big for both clubs because there are not that many Championship clubs who have reached a Wembley FA Cup semi final.

“To have that opportunity is fantastic. The match is set up to be an absolute humdinger on the back of some poor results and hopefully set up to get a reaction from the players.

“It would be fantastic for everyone concerned, staff, players and more importantly the fans. For us as a team now, hand on heart, to say we can give something back to the fans would mean everything to everyone at the club.”

Manchester United fan Appleton admits facing United at Wembley would be a dream come true for him but insists this tie is about the club as a whole, not individuals.

He said: “Manchester United at Wembley would be what dreams are made of for me personally. But it is not about me, I mean that, it is about getting to the semi finals meaning so much to the club because it has been one of those seasons.

“I am sure the fans would get the sense the football club is going in the right direction. I don’t know if the cup has affected our league form, I’m sure Kenny Jackett would say the same. It looks that way because both sides have gone on similar runs.

“Every manager you speak to says that. I was speaking to Lennie Lawrence and he said ‘every time you go on a cup run your league aspirations will go down the pan’. He said that from his own experiences.

“It is like a vicious circle. Everyone wants to have a cup run but everyone knows the league is your bread and butter.

“But we are where we are and it is what it is. I don’t suppose any players associated with Blackburn and Millwall who would want anything different this weekend.”

Appleton’s selection options are limited due to a string of injuries and Dave Jones, Cameron Stewart and DJ Campbell being cup-tied.

But, when asked if midfielder Danny Murphy would return, after being axed on Tuesday night, the Rovers boss was non committal.

He said: “It is one of them. We have to make sure we get it right, if we feel we need to have that type of midfielder sitting and holding in the middle of the park then that will be the case. It is a conversation needed to have with staff.

“We have two or three different scenarios we have worked on.”

Appleton is straight talking and at the time we needed that (and still do!).

I don't think he is quality manager and if Venks have ambition I don't think he is the one to take us there. Having said that we must give him a chance !!

To give Rovers the best chance of going forward we must back them. Like you say there is enough negativity from appy so as fans we should just support the team and back the players as much as possible.

Good luck tomorrow and lets get Wigan (if they get through) in Semi Final !!

not likely we get in a relegation scrap, but todays results highlight how important the match tomorrow will be to give moral a boost and get us fighting again..

Worst possible scenario I can think of tomorrow is Best getting injured again or any of our key players getting injured. Our injuries have severely crippled our options and Appy's chance of getting a team selection that works for him. That said, CK, Rhodes and Best could be a formidable attacking force and we need to get goals on the board again now that we seem to defensively at least, be a lot more settled.

I agree though, keep Murphy on the bench

Firstly, please stop replying to Nomad. He has nothing to offer to the Blackburn Rovers agenda. The Millwall game will be a defining moment for Appleton. Nobody should expect us to win given the manner in which he has fragmented our team, team but the manner in which we are defeated should determine his future at the club. Both teams are pretty awful at the moment but if Appleton approaches the game the game positively and actually tries to win the game he might just muster enough support to make it to the end of the season. If he plays the typical Appleton way and we go out without testing their keeper then the season and his career is over. I do not expect us to win. A team loaded with loan players has no sense of pride, loyalty or commitment but I do expect him to select a team and deploy tactics that at least look like he wants to. Under any other circumstances and any other manager a Blackburn win would be a foreign conclusion.

Your appeal for Appy to be positive is laudable, perhaps a demonstration of something similar from yourself in the run up to a big game would be useful ?

On a couple of your specific points....

I think its unfair to blame him for the fragmentation of the team, don't we all know it's been a long time since we had a 'team', and who's to blame. Appy is just trying to rebuild with the tools at his disposal. You may not agree with his solution but you cannot say he is the cause.

I also disagree with your generalisation about loan players, (even if they were available for cup games), it's not as if pride, loyalty and commitment have been oozing from our our permanent squad now is it ? Simply put, Murphy vs Jones, who looks like they give a 5hit ?

Thank you for the comments but my attitude, positive or negative, will have absolutely no bearing on today's game whereas Appleton`s should.
On the other point there are usually three possible reasons why players are on loan.
1. They are promising young players who need experience that they are unlikely to get at their own higher placed clubs. e.g. that not very good defender from Man City.
2.They are washed up old journeyman not good enough to hold down positions at their own club and not good or committed enough to make an impression at their new ones so they just get passed around like a tatty old library book. e.g. DJ Campbell.
3.They are proven quality players but their manager does not have the judgement or vision to utilise their creativity.e.g. Rochina , Formica, Vucevij.
I can be as negative as I like on these pages but I have NEVER booed the team or manager at the ground. I prefer to express my anger by not using my season ticket.

There you go again, lambasting anyone who has a different view. I bet you were one of those kids who took the ball in if you weren't winning and then turned round calling them names. Grow up.
Grow up eh?
Lets examine your arguments, I do not lambast anyone with a differing view. If I did I would be on here all day long like you with all your multi accounts ( dont bother) as I disagree with about 80% of the dross posted on here
No the ones I go after are the obvious bogus anti Rovers posts which are Dingle led propaganda
Taking any number of examples you see them, we are doomed, bankrupt beaten before a ball is kicked etc. Posts from so called supporters who blame Appy for everything, ignoring the history of two years past
I dont know if Appy will cut it long term but I am prepared to give him a chance .
No, the posts I object to are the ones that want Rovers to fail and call it realism. I want Rovers to win, always and that earns me the title of deluded fool from you, err, is that not slagging off my point of view ?
And you dare to call me childish
Rich, very rich.
Anyway I am going to watch the game live today and I will believe in my team until the score says otherwise at the end, but you never know.

Not bothered either way. London is a long way, a lot of money and a tedious journey to see Rovers get spanked by a multi-million pound Premiership side. Would much prefer our potential semi to be held nearer and only the final to be at the National Stadium but understand we would have to go there for a semi to pay for London's overspending on Wembley. Why have one final when you can have three? Total charade.

This thread is about football as Blackburn Rovers FC is owned by Indian Billionaire in Pune India the Venky famiy.
India wants to eradicate poverty by 2025 as Indian government is spending £70 Billion on welfare to lift millions out of poverty every year.
No India is not a third world country it's been redefined as Emerging economy as India s one of the most advanced country in the world.
India will be economic superpower by 2025 and will have the third largest economy in the world and by 2040 it will overtake USA and will have the second largest economy in the world.
India has more than 400 million out of poverty between 1985 to 2011 there are now 350 million on poverty which Indian Government is tackling by way of welfare spending and job creation.India has more than 400 million middle class and 450 million working class and the 350 million on poverty.
India is second largest investor in UK investing £24 Billion a year and created thousands of jobs in UK.
India is an aid donor
Africa starving $5 Billion
Afghanistan $2 Billion
Bangladesh $1 Billion
Sri Lanka,Bhutan,Nepal and Sikkim $1 Billion
India will no longer receive foreign aid in 2015 from USA,EU,Japan and UK sum of $4.5 Bilion as Indian Government say it's peanuts as India spends £70 Billion on welfare to help the poor in India.
