Blackburn Rovers manager: 'It's up to you Gael'
9:23am Friday 1st March 2013 in Sport
By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
Gael Givet
MICHAEL Appleton has told Gael Givet ‘get yourself fit and you will be back in contention’ after insisting there has been no fall-out between him and the Frenchman.
The Blackburn Rovers boss admits an interview to French media attributed to Givet was a misjudgement by the player but revealed the duo had held a “frank and honest” conversation since the comments were made.
Givet (pictured) has been reported as saying ‘If left alone in Blackburn, I’d have already hanged myself’, before insisting his Ewood Park career is over.
But, ahead of tomorrow’s Championship visit of Peterborough, Appleton insists a mini pre-season can help Givet get back into his plans.
He said: “I have not had a conversation about it as such with Gael yet because I didn’t see the reports before he had gone home for the day.
“I want players to be dis-appointed if they are not in the the side and I want players to be disappointed if they are not getting enough games.
“Regardless of whether those comments were tongue in cheek though the type of words used were a big misjudgement from his point of view.
“I had a conversation with Gael on Friday, we had a good conversation, an open and a frank one. We talked about where he was in his head, where he was mentally and physically. I did tell him I didn’t think he was physically fit enough to play.
“So we have come to an arrangement where he will have a mini pre-season over the next two or three weeks, to make sure after training he gets himself topped up and does extra.
“Then he will feel better about himself, mentally, and once he feels better about himself mentally and is in a better position physically, then if we do need to call upon himself I will have the confidence he can go out on the pitch and feel good about himself.”
Givet has made only 13 appearances this season, his last start coming in the mid December defeat to Blackpool, and was even left off the substitutes bench against Leeds on Saturday.
He was taken off at half time in the draw at Charlton due to not being in the ‘right frame of mind’ and has asked the club for a pay rise this season, after seeing a 50 per cent wage cut imposed following relegation.
Givet is reported to have told French media: “In any event, I’m done for here. I’ve only played one match plus nine minutes in four months. There have been approaches but the club’s been asking three or four million euros for me.
“And they told me: ‘If you go out on loan, you’ll have to renounce your final year of contract’. ‘That’s impossible! What if I get injured?
“Mentally, relegation to the second tier has been very hard to live with – and, even worse, I’m not even playing.”

If he is not fit enough to play why does MA keep putting him on the bench?

Seriously though I don't care what his attitude was under Lardarse, that is in the past, done and dusted and no amount of yearning for the "Good old days" will bring that back for players or supporters.
Yes when he actually wanted to play for us, "Tailors fees" accepted, he was great, put his heart and soul into every match.
But he has a serious attitude problem which isn't good for someone who is a highly paid professional athlete.
As a professional athlete it is his responsibility to keep himself fit and ready to play as and when required.
Appleton has made it very clear from the moment he walked into the club, we have an unbalanced squad and players who either don't fit in or don't want to play for us.
I hope that Appleton can turn him around, I really do, but if he can't, ship him out, fast.

Looks like MA has given GG one last opportunity to show what he can do - which will do two things - get him back in the Rovers team again and also put him in the shop window for the move away he wants. Sound man management from MA.

Can't really blame him can you. What a miserable, depressing place to be. A shambles of a football club from top to bottom showing utter disrespect to its senior professionals. Shameful on all levels, a player of his quality would walk into most Championship sides but look how he's being treated. Hope he get's out of Blackburn soon before something bad happens. Disgraceful.

After you rightly put it, a shambles of a club from top to bottom, that has been run into the ground by Venkys and Steve Kean over the last 2.5 years, has had 5 managers this season, coupled with protests and boycotts.
And guess what - we're still above Burnley!
What's your excuse for Burnley's league position? What with 'Ginger Mourinho' Dick Van Dyche working his magic and that wonderful Burnley supporting board of directors.

Don't believe that nonsense about fitness it is just a way of getting round the fact that they have been leaving a good player out and now realise they should be playing him, and by saying this they can save face. But it does sound like Venky's have been playing games with trying to get him off the wage bill and probably the same with Robinson.
appleton has clearly been struggling to put a back four together, hence the need to get rekik on loan. if givet was ready, why would he waste the money?
also, as givet himself points out, venkys hardly seem set to get rid. demanding a high transfer fee, or saying you're not going out on loan unless you sack off the last year of your contract is hardly the action of owners eager to get rid of a player.

Never rated Givet anyway, always been a liability as a midfielder, he would be more suited to the right wing using his pace to get in behind fullback and his pinpoint delivery to land crosses on Sambas head.

I feel for him after being the only surviving member of the old guard he should be treated better. After playing over 100 games between 10/12 to nothing and then being forced to take a 50% pay cut to part fund the transfers of Murphy, Etuhu and the entire Portuguese under 19 squad, i like he would be angry.
I would like to see him get back to health and provide some experience within the back four even if he's playing as a LB, although i would tell him to never bother getting forward as he has very little pace. He is not afraid to get stuck into a tackle and saved a certain goal on many occasions, his passion and determination has been demonstrated over the years and i for one would be happy to swap him out for this 50/50 back four we have at the moment.

What is it about footballers who seem to think they are beyond reproach? Give him extra training with an ultimatum that if he doesn't buy into it he'll be shown the door with a cancelled contract!!
