UPDATE: Rovers seal Bentley return

BLACKBURN Rovers have secured the return of former midfielder David Bentley.

The Spurs midfielder has put pen to paper on a loan move to Ewood Park until the end of the season.

Bentley established himself as a fans favourite at Rovers when he played for the club between 2006-2008.

Lack of match fitness seems to be an issue, but it sounds like he'll be worked like a dog in training to help him get there!

Could be an excellent addition at this level.

Bentley really was a legend for us and I certainly wasn't surprised when Tottenham came in with 17 million. I fully expected him to be a highly decorated player by now with many caps for England but for whatever reason it didn't happen for him. When it didn't work out at Arsenal and he came to us we re-ignited his drive and passion for the game lets hope we can do that for his game again. I remember him floating in peach after peach for Benni Mac and Roque Santa Cruz, we were a force to be reckoned with in those days under Hughes. Obviously he isn't the same player now and probably severely lacking in fitness/pace but I guarantee Appy can whip him back into shape and with our current wide men he will be a valued addition.

Don't get carried away it depends what place his head in when he comes. When he first came I remember that he had a lot of average non-descript games. It was his last full season with us that he was brilliant but has been poor since apart from the odd game. It is a good opportunity for him to get his act together and show he still got what it takes. Could be a good signing under MA.

I'm really pleased, was baffled when Steve Kean brought Santa Cruz back on loan without bentley who was available on loan too, given the goals Santa Cruz scored from Bentley assists, Rhodes Will be licking his lips with excitment you never lose crossing ability with age, I'm confident of play offs if appy pulls this off .

Could be a good signing, any player who has something to prove, should have plenty to give, at least at last, it seems the Venkys are listening, that a RW is a top priority,if they can get him match fit quickly he will be a very good addition.I think also that Appletons reputation is growing fast, making players wanting to come to Rovers again.

2 chuffing years of dirge as covered OUR club and still the good folk cannot, or dare not stick their necks out for this signing.

Well, come May if the guy as totally facked it up then I'll be here for you to stick your knives in me for my enthusiasm followed by the possibilities that he can bring to OUR team. I'm backing Mr.Appleton on this 100%.

His fitness is the only issue, but that will be taken care of now WE have a Sports Scientist back down at the club, and remember this - CLASS IS PERMANENT ! Bentley knows how to play (a) football.

No fear !

Excited ? Chuff me I might even break into a chuffing smile today !

I just hope they can hit the ground running; on paper its an amazing squad now with Rhodes, Best , DJ and Best up front, CKR, Bentley, Pederson and Olsson on the left/right of midfield. If we can get Thomas and Williamson is the tough tackling midfielder we have been crying out for we might just be in with a shout. You have not been following the plot mate - usually when something bad has happened at Ewood, then it has always been 100% down to bad decisions or even no decisions by the Venkys.

Who appointed Kean? Who sent Shebby here? Who got rid of JW and TF and Uncle Tom Cobley and all and some of our most experienced players? Who got us relegated? And who brought a load of horse manure into the club? Only Venkys.

That is why we said Venkys Out for two years or more.

Maybe things are changing now, it is looking better than it has done for a long long time now under Appleton. It does seem that Venkys are backing his decisions. But its too soon to tell for sure if this will continue yet.

Once the majority of Rovers fans can see genuine and positive moves and good decisions being made which are in the best interest of taking the club forwards from the Venkys - then there will probably be no more Venkys Out calls. Though there is still a lot of hurt out there...

Ask the same question in a years time mate and see what the answer is then...we all may be surprised!

Early days yet MC.

Throwing money at the problem won't solve all the problems on and off the field. There's a whole new lineup of players entering the squad who, though adding pace and oomph to the proveedings. will need to gel and play as a team which surely isn't going to happen overnight?

Don't get carried away it depends what place his head in when he comes. When he first came I remember that he had a lot of average non-descript games. It was his last full season with us that he was brilliant but has been poor since apart from the odd game. It is a good opportunity for him to get his act together and show he still got what it takes. Could be a good signing under MA.

I don't think many people on here would argue about the quality a fully fit Dunny would bring to the side. But we need a fully fit Dunny who can stay fit and last 90 minutes week in, week out to offer consistency and we haven't seen that for some time. It's not as if its an age thing when we look at Tugay and how he oozed quality, consistency and fitness well beyond Dunn's years. I think what David is experiencing is what Souness warned him about around his lifestyle coming home to roost. I am a big Dunny fan and I don't think anyone will ever show more passion in a Rovers shirt but he no longer has the physical ability to be a serious contender for a permanent place in Rovers midfield.

Spot on there captain.

On his day Dunny was exceptional, sadly his days have just been too few and too far between.

If he's fit he's a great option to bring off the bench to make something happen, and we even saw a great 30 minutes from him earlier this season, but he's fragile, and there's not much room for sentiment if we are going to fight our way back to the prem.

Good point but pity Robinson, Goodvillie, Givet and few others are still here. The only poor judgement has been sending Ruben Rochina on loan. How he has been missed in last two games.

I think Mark did a good job of getting the best out of him , I hope a bit of time we can get him somewhere near he used to be when he pulled on the blue and white half of Rovers.
One of the things that crossed my mind on hearing this news was how DB went on the list of those who left Rovers for brighter lights big city.....

A lot of post on here refer to DB as not being fit. I take it were talking first team match fitness, cos this guy aint no pie and pint man like 1 I could mention in the squad. Even as a fringe player at Spurs he would surely have been involved in training and reserve games. He passed the medical as fit to play. I have always been an admirer of DB, and had Sparky not gone to City then he may have stayed a couple of seasons more. I think returning to Rovers will give him a big lift mentally judging by the positive comments. Full home return debut against Leeds? That would lift me if I were in his boots.

My point exactly, yesterday. Apparently I'm a "knobhead" for pointing this out. And even more apparent is the selective forgetfulness of our fans. Quite keen to remember his hattrick, not so keen to remember his opinion of our club, the manner in which he engineered his move or the past few years of his career. Birmingham Mail's opinion on his loan there "flattered to deceive." Loan spell at West Ham ended in injury. Loan spell at FC Rostov ended in injury. I'll be happy for him to prove me wrong, of course, but I'm not too excited by this. We're not getting the Bentley who scored a hattrick. Rekik, on the other hand, I am very excited about. Rochina > Bentley any day of the week.
But guys, it is a small club compared with the london clubs. If you were offered the chance and you were a royers player i am sure you would have taken the chance too along with the big money. At the end of the day it is a job to them and want to better themselves just like you would change your job for better pay.
But the last thing you do is call the club that is paying your wages, and given you the opitunity! He was quick to leave when he was at little old Blackburn, but look where he is now! Back at little old Blackburn! I'm sorry but still can't forgive him for his actions! Spoilt little brat springs to mind
