Blackburn Rovers boss believes options key to progress

By Chris Flanagan, Sports reporter
MICHAEL Appleton is determined to add to his squad before Blackburn Rovers’ next league game at Hull City on Tuesday.
Appleton brought in DJ Campbell and Lee Williamson last week but is eager to bring in up to four more players.
The Rovers boss felt he was short of options for the midweek 1-1 draw at Brighton and knows the busy fixture schedule, which sees his side play nine games in 29 days, will test his squad to the limit.
Former Rovers ace David Bentley and deadline day target Jerome Thomas are among those Appleton is interested in signing, but he has so far been frustrated in the loan market.
Asked how progress had been, Appleton admitted: “Slow. Obviously there are a lot of factors that need to be considered but I think with the FA Cup being this weekend we’ve almost got a full week to make sure that something happens before the Hull game.
“We want loads of options and we haven’t got those options at the minute.
“I’ve publicly said we need cover defensively and we need some pace in wide areas as well. We need bodies in the building, I think it’s quite clear to see.”
Appleton added that he wanted options to rotate his starting XI.
He said: “I want to be making changes that either make us even better and stronger, or certainly make sure that we stay solid.”
“It’s okay making changes but obviously you don’t want to make changes that are going to have a detrimental effect to what happens on the pitch,” he said.
“That’s not being disrespectful to the players who we’ve got on the bench, it’s just that sometimes you need a certain type of player to change something, something a little bit different to take the pressure off.
“I think we were crying out on Tuesday for a little bit of pace and experience in the wide areas, especially in the final third.”

We have had two yes men in Kean and Berg over the last two years and now although a tad inexperienced we have a manager in the SA model, it will be interesting to see if they start to back him, should he resign with dignity at any time in the future the Venkys will be even more of a laughing stock than they are now and no one would take the job.
Lets hope he gets the backing!!

On the other hand I do find it funny that after getting rid of BFS, over two years later, the Venkys end up hiring a younger version of him.

I suspect the problem is more likely to be the right type of player available at the right time and the right price (or salary cost if on loan).
There is absolutely no point in paying out £x million on borderline PL quality players (which have to be our target level), signing on fees, personal terms etc if we intend getting promotion.
These players while good enough for The Championship are nothing better than bench warmers at best in the Premier League, if by some miracle we did go up this year they would be expensive contractual nooses round our necks for a couple of seasons.
Look at Givet and Robinson for examples of contracts favouring the player not the club, we don't need any more of that do we?
Better to try to get players on loan for 3 months and have a **** good look at them first, and I think this is how he is playing it.
I do question why Bentley's name is constantly mentioned, he has only played about 12 games in 2 years, all on short term loan, he can't be match fit, so what is the point?

I hope we don't p1ss Appleton off. He said he would be disappointed if we didn't get one of his targets before Tuesday's game.........hmmm it's Thursday now and still no movement - not looking good.

I don't think it's about any lack of backing, Venky's appear to have learned a hard lesson and have backed him so far by allowing him to build his own management team and bring in a couple of players of his own.

MA seems to have quickly understood where we are weak and need improvement and how to play the game tactically and how to change tactics against different opposition. He also quickly understood how to get the best out of his current players, how to decide who he will keep and who he will replace and who he wants to bring in to strengthen the squad.
He really does seem to be the perfect guy for the job that needed doing right now at the Rovers.
Whether he is the man for the future then only time will tell - but the signs are good at present.

2 million for Vuckevic?
3 million for Rochina?
2.5 for Formica?
Nuno Gomes on a very high wage!
Not one of those signings have done ultra well for us, and that is why i think they are not giving as much recently.

Never a truer word uttered in earnest by Mr. Appleton as that statement above. Your boy's did good on Tuesday evening under intense pressure.
Keep working away there Mr. Appy I'm sure you'll get the gifts you require before dead line day.
Bentley would be the icing on the cake delivering quality all day long.
Good enough, sir.

If they are not sure where or who to clear it, just get the body behind the ball head it out into touch, then regroup, lazy clearances in particular have been a cause of rovers not seeing games out with a clean sheet.

That's a double edge sword, of course. Most money that was invested during that period has been wasted due to poor management. But any hopes of significant future squad investment are futile in my opinion - Appleton is going to have to continue working a miracle if we're to be promoted I'm afraid.
