Strike ace Rhodes says Rovers can home in on play-offs
7:47am Monday 4th February 2013 in Sport
By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
CENTURION Jordan Rhodes insists Blackburn Rovers have to keep their focus after his double boosted hopes of a late play-off challenge.
The Rovers striker scored a goal in each half to secure a 2-0 home win over struggling Bristol City and insisted afterwards their promotion dreams were now “doable”.
It was announced at Ewood on Saturday that Rhodes’ two goals had taken him to 100 career league goals but the 22-year-old insisted the statisticians were wrong and that he had already reached his milestone.
The record books do agree that Rhodes has now scored in Rovers’ last six league games as he took his tally to 19 in all competitions for the club, leaving Michael Appleton’s men just seven points shy of the play-offs.
Rhodes, said: “I don’t know the stats but I got 100 league goals two or three games ago. I’m happy but everyone is two or three games out.
“I got my 100 a couple of games ago and celebrated internally. If you look through the records and add them up its now 102.
“I am happy. I aimed to get the 100 league goals by the age of 22 and I turn 23 next week.
“The play-offs are very much doable but at the same time it is important we keep our feet on the ground and stay level headed and take one game at a time.
“We have had a few games this season when our minds seemed elsewhere and you can count on two hands the games where we were in front and let teams come back into it in the last five or ten minutes, letting teams equalise or score a winner.
“We have to concentrate on the task in d and that is now next week and Ipswich where it is important to get a win. They beat Middlesbrough 4-0 today so they are a tough team.”
Rhodes received most of the plaudits on Saturday but the 22-year-old was quick to divert the praise away from himself.
He said: “It wasn’t a matter of who got the goals today, it wasn’t a matter of being pretty. It was just about getting the result.
“I’m on a good run, but at the same time it’s not a matter of who gets the goals just a case of getting them and securing a win.
“We need exactly the same mentality got into next weeks game with Ipswich.
“Sometimes you go into games and the ball falls for you and some times you do exactly the same and it doesn’t happen.
“Sometimes you make those runs to the near post and the ball goes to the back. It is just that little bit of luck. The ball just managed to find me a couple of times today.”
Meanwhile, former Portsmouth midfielder Lee Williamson is set to join Rovers this week. He is currently a free agent.
And DJ Campbell and Jerome Thomas should complete their loan moves to Ewood Park on Friday.

we are definitely not a prem outfit at the moment - god forbid that we were sneak into the play-offs and then even worse get promoted - heaven knows what grief we would encounter in the top drawer.
this rest of this season should be about trying to get some equilibrium and consolidation at ewood and make sure that everything is in place next season for a proper assault on the promotion spots in 13/14 (venkys/shabby and the other clowns permitting).
appleton is talking a good game and we are progressively looking a bit more like a team, as opposed, to a bunch of stangers - BUT! we are a way off where we need to be.
i know we, as rovers fans, can be accused of being overly negative and inwardly naval gazing - but you cannot under-estimate the trail of destruction heaped upon our club in such a short time. sure other clubs have gone doolally and bananas - but generally these clubs had been in chaos for a number of years - but rovers capitulated in effectively 12 months. the closest i can think of to rovers is birmingham city (who to my shortsighted eyes are in more trouble than us) and karsten yeung has been involved at blues since 2007 (takeover in mid 2009).
get our business in order - and with a fair wind; mount a challenge next season and if we are lucky we may be ready for the prem in 14/15. remember when we went down in 98/99 - it took the removal of kidd and the rebuilding by souness for us to come back two seasons later - and then we were a much better organised club with a stable base and jack walker still there (at least for the first season in D1.....or whatever it was called then)

Might be time for some of you to lower your sights a little and accept what you've become. btw, we've won last two games under Appy so yeah feeling a little confident since no transfers were made into the club during that time. Best is back soon and Williamson, Campbell and Thomas in the first team should really up the gameplay.

So our second striker, who has a combined goal tally of 3 goals all season, didn't score again, didn't hit the target again, didn't create any assists, didn't create any chances whatsoever and to you he was OUTSTANDING MAN OF THE MATCH?!
Or do you base that on the fact that "he won the headers from the longballs"? The 90% of balls that come from our backline that are aimed at him. I counted 6 times thourghout 90 mins where CKR was bearing down on goal and decided to shoot. How many of those hit the target? Zero. I think the lad Goodwillie would be at least able to test the keeper once in 90 mins.

I understand he is in the situation Roberts and Salgado was in terms of games played and contract length so if he isn't going to be selected then why have him on the wage bill sitting it out for his pay? There isn't any club that would do that. Agreed Venkys are trying to trim the wage bill. It was a substantial part of our outgoings. Some of us think they have done it in the wrong areas. Got rid of good players and brought in dross on the advice of Kean. Either way, the club, no championship club can afford to have such a high proportion of the income going on wages. You are always quick to remind us we arent in the premier league so why do you think we wouldnt move on premier league players?

Great to see that Rhodes is level headed and more importantly TOTALLY realistic about our performances. He does not gloss over everything when he knows things are still not quite right.
We were fortunate to win on Saturday although we did have a lot of possession.
They had the best three chances in the game however luckily for us they missed them all.
Shot flashed over the bar first half.
Hit the post with the best move of the game first half
Just after half time headed the ball straight at Kean when it would have been easier to score. Could have been three to them quite easily.
Apart from Rhodes I cannot remember one player having a single shot on target and non coming from our midfield. Excluding Mortens free kick.
CKR was outstanding mind and man of the match by a mile followed by Hanley which says something if he had to be at his best!!
Were under the cosh for 15 / 20 minutes beginning of the second half and took that long to recover from 3 of our players not coming onto the field in time for the resumption of the second half so goodness knows what had gone on in the half time break.
When they kicked off we had 8 players on the pitch. Murphy was beside himself.
Could have cost us.
" Apart from Rhodes I cannot remember one player having a single shot on target" + "CKR was outstanding mind and man of the match by a mile"

I have my own mind and I don't believe all of those players you mention wanted out just because we were relegated.
Nelsen is a fighter and I don't believe for one minute that he would walk away from a fight. Jones was sold, Kalinic was sold Emmerton Freed, Yes freed, why. Salgado forced out along with others.
You have your opinion which you are entitled to, but I won't be convinced that Venkys were not happy to get the top earners off the books to replace them with cheap second raters, Rhodes excepted.
Hence our position now.

The rest, all Allardyce men got what they wanted, away from the club with a very healthy bank balance, well Givet hasn't yet but he's still working on it.
Jones wasn't ours, he was on loan, there was never any chance of him signing full time, that was clear from the onset.
Rhodes or Kalinic? Who would you prefer?
I can see that you are one of those who are always right and will argue all night, I won't waste my time.
By the way, Jones WAS ours.
He went to Manchester United for £17, 000, 000 didn't he? or perhaps I'm wrong about that.
They chose however not to replace them like for like, but preferred to bring in cheaper, inferior players on less money.

Venky may have let the fans down ,when they sacked Sam Alladyce and promised to spend millions on new players.
Sam Alladyce told the press investment was needed at Brfc and was dried up since the club was put up for sale.Blackburn has a strong history it could have a bright future with the given the right sort of investment .
Venkys didn't live up to that promise by sacking Sam and appointing Steve Kean.
Venkys have made their mistake in the last two years then appointed Shebby Singh as global advisor and later Kean resigned.Fans were right that Venkys let their football club run into the ground.
Venkys now have to invest heavily and allow Appleton to buy players he want to win the fans back.Shebby and Hendry must be sacked.I would appoint someone like Simon Garner or Alan Shearer as club advisor to win the fans back. Venkys now realise that their mistakes .

Venkys are going nowhere soon. There is still 32 Million quid to come to the club over the next three years in parachute payments, so we will be adding decent players (like Rhodes and Best et al) to the squad and pushing on this season to set ourselves up for automatic promotion next season. Though being in the play-offs this season should be a good experience for us.
So we will soon be waving you goodbye (once again) as we leave you at least one division lower over the next two seasons. Enjoy your brief flirt with the dizzying heights of 7th place cos that's the last time you will ever be that high again (unless you are on the wacky baccy)... go post on your own site if you even have one to post on?

" Apart from Rhodes I cannot remember one player having a single shot on target" + "CKR was outstanding mind and man of the match by a mile"
I am not his greatest fan however won balls in the air - held the ball up well - took some pressure off JR - Brought and played others into the game - filled the hole between JR and poor midfield
Whole lot better than Charlton etc games he has played.

If Venkys sell up and go ,its fine by me they did buy BRFC on the cheap about £48 million with debts of £25 million.I was told Brfc was in the market for over two years the Walkers wanted about £100 million for BRFC, but no interest from anybody but an Indian man based in Middle East was the only man was shown interest in the club.He was called Hassan Ali Syed then he decided to buy the Spanish Club Racing Santander. He is friend of Venkys so he informed them Blackburn Rovers FC was in the Market, so the Venkys contacted the BRFC owners and Boardroom people .Venkys met Robert Coar,John Williams and the Walker family, all the parties were happy about Venkys takeover of BRFC.

I appreciate workers don't get paid much in India and it is dirt cheap to live there but they must be starting at a pretty low point if they are considered to be in poverty under those circumstances. I don't see many of them joining your darlings the super rich anytime soon though.

If you want a top team / players you've got to pay the going rate if you want to head in an upward direction.
Have Venkys learned ?... No....Promotion....N
o.
If you pay second rate players second rate wages, guess what, you'll end up second rate.
You do talk some ****.
Robinson has been crap all season, responsible for at least three home defeats, and lets not even talk about Givet, they don't want to play for anyone outside the PL but they want PL wages.
Clear them out and start again.
Or in your fevered imagination do you think that at the end of last season if any PL club had come in for them they would have stayed at Ewood?
There is no sentiment and scant loyalty in football anymore, especially from the players.
If you had read my post correctly and understood it instead of seeing red, you will have noticed that the practice of off loading the top earners has been going on for two years now.
Which direction have we been heading ?
Nelsen didn't get a convenient injury, Samba didn't refuse to play for us, Givet didn't refuse to play for us because he didn't get the £75k he paid his "Tailor" for helping him get his transfer back?
Leaving us with an unfit Dann and a raw 18 year old up against the van Persie's and Rooney's of this world?
You and a few others need to stop believing the tripe spoon fed to you by BRAG and think what you are saying.
Do you not for one minute think that any of these players walked away from Ewood with an empty wallet? They all walked away with more money than you or I will ever see in our lifetime.
Because that's how contracts work.
Why didn't Robinson go to West Ham? Because he wanted his contract paid up before he would leave, that's why.
Does that not tell you anything?
I have my own mind and I don't believe all of those players you mention wanted out just because we were relegated.
Nelsen is a fighter and I don't believe for one minute that he would walk away from a fight. Jones was sold, Kalinic was sold Emmerton Freed, Yes freed, why. Salgado forced out along with others.
You have your opinion which you are entitled to, but I won't be convinced that Venkys were not happy to get the top earners off the books to replace them with cheap second raters, Rhodes excepted.
Hence our position now.
We were still in the PL with more than half a season, blah, blah regarding Samba and Givet.
I agree that Salgado was treated badly, but he is the only one who has spoken up about it. The rest have kept very quiet, I wonder why?
The rest, all Allardyce men got what they wanted, away from the club with a very healthy bank balance, well Givet hasn't yet but he's still working on it.
Jones wasn't ours, he was on loan, there was never any chance of him signing full time, that was clear from the onset.
Rhodes or Kalinic? Who would you prefer?
I can see that you are one of those who are always right and will argue all night, I won't waste my time.
By the way, Jones WAS ours.
He went to Manchester United for £17, 000, 000 didn't he? or perhaps I'm wrong about that.

That still doesn't alter the fact that they were never replaced like for like, Venkeys preferring to replace them with cheaper, inferior players. Hence our position now. That was my whole point before you jumped in on my post whilst I was replying to someone else.

Don't get me wrong, Venky's remain totally at fault for our decline, they were either ripped off by whoever or were totally unprepared for what could happen.
But owners, management, players and fans all have a role to play.
Key members of any team, role models if you like, who are unhappy create a negative atmosphere which becomes all permeating, everyone is affected, and the only way to go is get rid.
OK we think Venky's got "good money" for those that left, but all the contracts have clauses and sub clauses, usually to the players advantage, so I suspect that Venky's will have done well to break even on the deals.
As for second rate players, if you were a player similar in stature, or possibly better than say, Chris Samba, looking at Rovers from the outside, a club with crackpot owners, an inexperienced manager who is despised by the majority of fans, fans baying for blood every game, a team loosing confidence, possibly heading for relegation.......
Would you sign for them?
