JORDAN Rhodes scored in his sixth consecutive league game as his double helped Blackburn Rovers to their first Championship win under boss Michael Appleton.
Rovers' £8million man scored in each half to prove the difference against struggling Bristol City and move them to just seven points away from the play-offs.
Jordan Rhodes gave Rovers the lead in a first half that offered little else.
The striker was on the spot to clinically finish after Morten Gamst Pedersen's right wing cross had been mis kicked by Grant Hanley.
Rovers dominated possession for the majority of the half but struggled to create many other chances of note.
Pedersen curled a free kick against the bar, while Markus Olsson dragged a volley well wide.
At the other end, Stephen Davies struck a shot against the post in the dying seconds of the half while Stephen Pearson fired over after racing clear.
Rovers started the second half sloppily and were lucky not to be level when Marvin Elliott headed straight at goalkeeper Jake Kean on 54.
The hosts doubled their lead on 65. Rhodes raced on to a hopeful clearance from Murphy, shrugged off James Wilson and finished calmly.

not been today so not sure how Rovers performed but 3 points was needed to give us any hope of maybe a play-off place.
there could well be a bit of light at the end of a very long dark tunnel. Appletons no nonsense straight talking methods are exactly what this squad needed and good riddance to the gravy train brigade.

Being fair, Bristol were very poor, they had Elliot running the game for them in midfield and as soon as he got tired after about 65 minutes, they basically folded.
Evident that Rovers play with a lot of caution in their heads until they are two up, but everybody did their jobs against a team that didn't press us too much.
Still need some power and quality in midfield if we are going to compete with decent teams but things are improving, although IMO the team just don't talk to each other enough during the game.
Tonight's going to be a good night !

Not the prettiest but 3 points in the bag and that is all that really matters because too often we have been sloppy and slipped up against teams we should have beaten. Now we do need some creativity in midfield and much better service from the flanks and Rhodes will be well on the way to his next 100 goals and Rovers should get a shot at the playoffs. Only thing that stopped it being a perfect Saturday afternoon was the posh letting the dingles sneak a late draw but guess we cannot have everything

Poor game, it was dull with very little quality. As others have said Hanley is very strong and Jordan Rhodes is the most clinical finisher I think I've ever seen at Rovers. If he was as good a footballer as Shearer he would be worth a fortune.
Everybody will say the same, the 3 points are more important than the performance. I don't think the football will be too exciting with Appelton in charge.

I dindn't fancy Appleton as next boss at Ewood Park but i am having a second thought of his guy.Appleton won me over .Well done MA good result today and wish you all the best for future.Appleton want Venkys to stay away from Ewood Park . only 13,500 turned up atmosphere was a poor too. A few more wins and more fans could be back at Ewood Park .

Just loved today. a lot of positive vibes, though the away crowd was much more vocal. some decent performances, but still room for a lot of improvement. Murphy to me had another average day. Lowe was off completely and should have been subbed at half time, but we looked capable and hungry after the second goal - which gave me the chills btw.

For goodness sake stop moaning. It does not matter we were playing a team lower than us. We have lost many a game we should have won over the last few years. It has been a dismal time for for to long. We may wll be over the worst. Appleton sounds a sensible man after all the rubbish we have been fed recently and the team reflected that today. OK so it was not good all afternoon but the players never for one moment looked, as they have many times this season, under any stress. They coped with everything. Hanley & Dann especially were on top of their game. This is the first time for 2 years that I have felt, from the first moment, that the team was in control. The crowd were with the players all afternoon, a wonderful change from recent times
Good of them all and good to see Pederson back in the team - he should never have been dropped.
Maybe I can now see us going onwards and upwards. Lets hope they settle down to a good run of results. I cannot wait to get to Ewood next Saturday, and thats the first time I have felt like that for a long, long time.

Only 3 points behind Burnley and with a game in hand! Well done on the win today after months of upheaval. It makes for a good NE Lancashire football rivalry to the end of ther season. I hope both teams can be competing near the top at the end........

Defensively we were better, but again Kean having way too much to do considering how few chances Bristol City created. Appleton says he doesn't regret the players going who don't want to stay and I guess he's right. He certainly seems to know how he wants this team to play and they seem to want to play for him which is encouraging. CK-R put a shift in. As did Orr who had a point to prove. Overall much to take heart from and another win to prove MA has it in him to deliver results.
Anyone know what the aggro was in the away crowd? saw someone being carted off but was too busy watching the game to see it all.

Solid no nonsense performance against a poor side who put together 1 decent move in the whole 90 mins. Clean sheet was a bonus but midfield was woeful, Murphy can't pass a ball , simple as that and Lowe put a shift in but no inventiveness. Rhodes showed why we paid 8mill for him though, cool finish for his 2nd while the defenders were trying to drag him back. Can only beat what's put in front of us and we were better than 2-0 suggests. Slightly more disciplined performance and the fitness looked better which has concerned me all season and last to be honest.
Will enjoy a beer tonight with the knowledge we've made some progress , but we're a long way off a good side and nowhere near challenging for a play off place. Worst sides have gone up but we need to build a solid squad before getting any big ideas

Excellent result and more to come from this rapidly improving squad - well done Michael Appleton! The three points and the clean sheet keeps the ball rolling for the club and with Best to be fit soon plus two decent players coming in on-loan then things look better than for some considerable time. Being fair, Bristol were very poor, they had Elliot running the game for them in midfield and as soon as he got tired after about 65 minutes, they basically folded.
Evident that Rovers play with a lot of caution in their heads until they are two up, but everybody did their jobs against a team that didn't press us too much.
Still need some power and quality in midfield if we are going to compete with decent teams but things are improving, although IMO the team just don't talk to each other enough during the game.
Tonight's going to be a good night !

One lad in front of me today slated Richards every time he was on the ball. Even had the nerve to call him lazy 2 min after he had sprinted half the length of the pitch to close down! Some people are that negative after the last two years they don't know how to praise the team! Myself and a few around me all agree that we are looking, better defensively, and going forward, just need 2 centre midfielders. Also they are looking a lot fitter! Keep up the good work lads and who knows, a trip to wembley might be on the cards!!!

Great 3 points today, dire game to watch but at least the players are begining to show some fighting spirit.
I'm personally gutted Rochina has gone, he was the only player in the current squad with any flair and the ability to get me on the edge of my seat.

First time in years it feels like some order is returning. Rovers cruised through today. Another clean sheet and a new team taking shape. Don't rate Orr, Murphy or Lowe but otherwise good. Such a relief to have Pedersen on raising the overall skill level. Rhodes is no Shearer (as some suggested), totally different style, but he is a great striker of the ball and will convert chances very efficiently. We are on our way back to sanity :)

I thought the team seemed more comfortable today but it was hard to judge because Bristol City looked poor and offered nothing. The first half was a poor affair really with the odd highlight. Pedersen's free kick hitting the bar and Rhodes goal. Thought after the second goal they got their tails up and seemed to be more daring. I felt sure we could have had another two goals before the end but just being greedy. Jordan Rhodes. What a cool customer he is. That second goal was inch perfect and so cheeky. When he has sight of the goal mouth I feel as though a goal is certain. Clinical like a certain Mr Shearer but not as good a footballer, not as strong and athletic I would say. If only we played two up front and got some service down the wings to him. He'd score a shed load. Those of you not going, get down to the games and give some support. Crowd was really low today but more positive atmosphere. Great to hear Salgado's song and I see he acknowledged it on twitter.

A dire game with a shining light of Jordan Rhodes. To mention Hanley too who was very strong in winning the ball and Pedersen who chased everything and put in some decent balls. Bristol were not good and Id loved us to have got them by the scruff after the second goal and paste them but the confidence isnt there yet. Hopefully it will come back. Another win next week would be brilliant and get some of the crowd back down Ewood. It's worth it to see Mr Rhodes slot those goals home. You will get that Shearer feeling.

Both of Rhodes's goals were classics in their own right, especially the second, but the defence still concerns me, it looked pretty fragile for about 10 minutes in the second half.
So onwards and upwards, slowly, quietly and see what happens.

Play offs a real possibility but we need to string a run together. Hanley excellent today. Murphy poor again. Rhodes is a class act and we need to find a way of upping the service to him. He can score for fun!

Great result today, seeming as this was a team who beat Watford 2-0 during the week.
Not bothered by uninspiring football as fitness, discipline and organisation was what we needed sorting first. Good football will come after that.
Rhodes is prolific, fact. If the DJ Campbell deal goes through, then we could potentially have a lot of firepower in the form of Rhodes, Best and Campbell.
Defence - solid. What would help them is if there were less mistakes in midfield.

Being fair, Bristol were very poor, they had Elliot running the game for them in midfield and as soon as he got tired after about 65 minutes, they basically folded.
Evident that Rovers play with a lot of caution in their heads until they are two up, but everybody did their jobs against a team that didn't press us too much.
Still need some power and quality in midfield if we are going to compete with decent teams but things are improving, although IMO the team just don't talk to each other enough during the game.
Tonight's going to be a good night !

I like MA's stance on players who don't want to be in a Rovers shirt (even though I'm shocked to discover Rochina is one). In getting them to play for the shirt, hopefully it'll be easier for MA to get them fired up with that 'win at all costs' mentality that we once had pre Nov 2010 and saw a bit of today. Early signs, but nice one the lads and MA - onwards and upwards - beers are on me this weekend :)
On Rochina though, I really hope he changes his mind personally, especially if Appleton can restore some normality and dare I say pride back here, I really do think he's got the potential to be a top quality player given the right environment. The others I don't mind so much.

Good solid performance well done BRFC, a bit hit and miss going forward but the hardworking and organisation is coming back which is the unsexy bit we often forget about, we'll always score goals even when not playing too well if we keep the other team out we have half a chance. Good three points yesterday and have to say I was most impressed with Hanley. Three months ago I would have had him first out of the door but it goes to show what proper management / coaching can do to help young players like him.
Still a long way to go to get back to what we were but I think MA has made a decent start overall.

First time in years it feels like some order is returning. Rovers cruised through today. Another clean sheet and a new team taking shape. Don't rate Orr, Murphy or Lowe but otherwise good. Such a relief to have Pedersen on raising the overall skill level. Rhodes is no Shearer (as some suggested), totally different style, but he is a great striker of the ball and will convert chances very efficiently. We are on our way back to sanity :)

Well I was just wondering if Appleton had got the green light from both Qpr and West Brom to take both players on loan? I think he may be putting a Keanesque positive spin on the situation and must feel as bad as we did when we heard the news. I do think it is imperative that we have a right winger but I am not to sure we require D J Campbell now Best is in full training.
