Venky’s hire PR firm to improve image
8:02am Monday 14th January 2013 in Sport
By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
BLACKBURN Rovers’ under fire owners Venky’s have hired a London public relations firm in an attempt to improve their media coverage.
After a series of PR disasters during their Rovers regime, Venky’s have called on The Sports PR Company to drive the way the club handle the press.
The Sports PR Company were involved in dealing with the publicity surrounding the appointment of new boss Michael Appleton and are understood to have been signed up until the summer initially.
The company’s website boasts of ‘pro active and reactive PR services’, ‘profile building and image protecting’, ‘assistance in seeking sponsorship deals’ and ‘media training for clients’.
Tellingly, they also have experience of ‘crisis management’, including helping handle the coverage of Fabrice Muamba’s heart failure and rugby player Matt Stevens’ drug scandal.
Clients the company have worked with include Didier Drogba, Theo Walcott and former England star David Beckham.
Venky’s are understood to be concerned about the negative press they have been getting over their running of Rovers, with a large section of the Ewood Park faithful angry about their role in the club’s slide into the Championship.

Sack Agnew, Shaw and Singh
Crawl on your hands and knees to John Williams and ask him to come back and run the club. Tom Finn and Martin Goodman would also help.
Apologise to the fans.
You can have that for free!

Worked on the Muamba case - fair enough, but the stuff about Muamba - was effectively managing a good news story (once he was over the worst). Most of the early stuff surrounded Owen Coyle standing outside the hospital every day giving updates on Muamba's condition.....nobody with any sense or heart wanted anything bad to happen to Fabrice (apart from the obvious trolls and meatheads)
Rovers' case is much more complicated and is exacerbated by the fact that outside of a small part of NE Lancs - nobody really gives a toss and are, quite rightly, laughing at us, the club and particularly venkys.....the only sympathy comes from those who realise it could quite easily be them next.
all any PR company in this instance (and i write with experience of the medium) can do is, at best, paper over the cracks.- it is not crisis management at rovers, it is damage limitation.
are you seriously telling me that the adams family would listen to any advice from a london PR when making (or not making decisions)? why would the Sports PR Company have any more sway than any of the other pretenders that pollute our beloved club?
what is needed is not PR - but a radical overhaul of all the key execs who prove that lunatics can not run an asylum, coupled with a much more decisive and strategic decision making process. clearly tweedle dee and dum are replicating the chaos they engendered at PNE and layered on top of that you have the cherry on the cake (or at least the red nose) that is charlie careloli (IS HE STILL WITH US? NOBODY KNOWS) - perhaps that is the first question our expert PR can deal with
as others have already mentioned - isn't agnew meant to incorporate PR as his business (in)competencies? WTF has he been doing for the last 26 months then? if the loons in pune feel the need to recruit a PR - then surely it calls into question agnew's role and represents an opportunity to sack him (WITH NO COMPO) for breach of contract and try to let him sue us.
realistically what rovers needs right now - is a couple of experienced pragmatic people with a knowledge of how the football game works to come in to the club - do a "drains up" exercise of all things smelly, be empowered to make critical decisions, bang loads of heads together and start to get a grip in making this club a well organised and proud club once more....say someone like tom finn and john williams...just a thought.

I agree that we are a disaster and a joke football club so wonder how a PR company can change peoples perspective of us unless the team starts winning as respect comes from the way we play and success on the field.Barcelona are the best respected club and its basedon good management.buying top players.attitude.pro
fessionalism,coachin
g etc etc but all that comes from the top and it is the organisation of the club which holds it all together.Unfortunate
ly if Mrs Desai continues to run the club from India in such a fire fighting fashion employing idiots like Shebby she will only reap what she has sown and that is a losing side and a massive financial tombstone.

Get John Williams back??? He works at Man city, the richest football club in the world and also, when he was in charge weren't we in debt by 24 million? Thats a well run business aint it, 24 million in debt and growing year on year.
So they decide to sell off some assets to pay off the debt. Isn't that just good business sense?
The loons on here need to realise that everyone in football wants a sugar daddy, an abramovic to write off mounds and mounds of debt every year so they can keep buying the worlds best players.
But we can't do that, we have gone back to the pre walker days except we have a better ground and training facilities. Now we have to deal with running the club within its own finacial foot print.
I have no doubt the torch bearing lynch mob don't want to hear the truth and will continue to think we are bigger than we are.
Can you honestly think of three smaller and worse clubs/teams than us in the premier league, I can't.
And it looks like Villa will be following our lead because they are going the same way, they too are no longer a BIG CLUB.

My advice to Venkys is simple - try treating the customers of Blackburn Rovers (i.e. the fans) with some respect.
Simple things such as replying to letters and emails should be standard proceedure for all UK businesses.
Over the past year I have written or sent emails to;-
1) Venkys in India,
2) our PR man Paul Agnew,
3) our Global Advisor Shebby Singh,
4) and more recently Blackburn Rovers FC direct,
- and I have not had the curtesy of one reply from any of them.
Is it any wonder why fans have turned their backs on the club when they have been ignored and treated in this way?
The LT should send the comments on this site direct to The Sports PR Company - it will save them a fortune in market research

At the moment we've not been through what some clubs have e.g. Portsmouth, Darlington, Leeds, Bradford, Sheff Weds, Brighton etc we could be but at least for a lot of those clubs the fans still turn up and support the team 20k wolves fans and they're below us!

The fact that Rovers are engaging another pr firm when we have Agnew on board would be an indication of his impending departure in any other organisation although I am referring to organisation's who know what they are doing and of course Venkys do not fit that profile.
As I have said many times before, the organisational approach employed by Venkys in running the club is no more than a bizzare blend between Saddam Hussain and Frank Spencer.
Until they leave things will not improve no matter how many PR gurus they employ.

What Venkys now need is someone to "bury the bad news" and put a gloss on a sale.
I know the dialogue from a thousand and one PR presentations.
Q. Isn''t Blackburn that rough place up North where they booh there own manager ?
A. Well no, it wasn't quite like that, you see Sheikh the club has great potential, my client Venkys just feel that it's time to move on, bu it's been a wonderful learning experience, blah, blah, etc, etc.
By the way, and I've done the media and PR circuit for yonks, never trust any company who has worked "with" in this case Drogba. Successful PR firms work "for"; working "with" means they probably stood at the back handing out drinks and snacks at some launch where they were sub-contracted.
If they're working for Venkys, they'll be cheapos.
Still, it does seem a move towards a sale.Let's hope we're still in the Championship.
I presume Venkys have told Appleton to do a Pompey, keep his eyes on the pitch and don't ask questions.

there are other experienced football administrators around who are competent and not afraid to make the correct decisions - it doesn't have to be W&F.
I have had a limited experience of the preston 2 in a previous life when myself and two other directors of the company i worked for were approached to work with PNE on a couple of projects - and found them unprepared for the meetings and (let's be polite) disappointing in their contribution in the discussions. needless to say we turned down the opportunity.
and mr/mrs 8 ball - sure enough there was debt in the club - but that debt was managed and unlike other prem lower league clubs stable (cf fulham, weztam, wigan, bolton, dirties, pompey, leicester, villa, boro wolves and even the likes of everton and liverpool) throughout the 2000-12 period that we were in premiership
regrettably the debt was serviced by the selling off of our jewels but the club traded on this and was able to keep our gearing under control. the key issue was our tunrover/wages percentage which because of the size of the club was too high.....compare this to the turnover/wages ratio now and the way the debt level is and will be spiralling. W&F were even able to manage compo for the management who exited the club (ex Ince) with Souness and Hughes netting good revenue - heaven's to betsy Hughes even managed to play the game by purchasing RSC for an inflated fee to Citeh.....compare that to :
compo for Allardyce, stupid contract and compo for Kean, one assumes the same for F&W (plus other execs), Black, Mimms etc, Berg and a bit to Blackpool for Appleton.
crisis manage that if you can - The Sports PR Company if you can.

Before Venkys we were in desperate financial trouble, John Williams had a huge overdraft to handle we couldn't afford, the Walker Family had no interest whatsoever in the club, still don't. We don't generate enough income from attendances to run a big club, we never have. Thanks to people like John Williams and some good management we have punched above our weight for many years. Problem was that it couldn't last forever, we needed a Venkys to survive. Somehow the relationship between the owners and the club/fans has to improve if we are to survive.
Calls for Venkys to sell are ludicrous beyond belief, who on earth would buy the club with our current reputation. Said it many times before, if Venkys leave, BRFC is finished, there wouldn't be enough money to honour present liabilities.
Running a football club is not rocket science, but it depends totally on having a good manager. Success on the pitch would solve everything, here's hoping Appleton can bring about a miracle.

The best publicity for the Venkys is to 'sack' Shaw Agnew Singh and Hendry then we might see the club going forward with some real professionals put in their place - this lot have with the Venkys support dragged the club to lower depths than ever before out with the lot of them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!
Real professionals come at a price Dave. It has seemed in the past that Venkys are not prepared to pay that price.

Simple solution
1. Replace the three stooges with an experienced chief executive with the authority to get things done and make decisions.
2. Get a proper business plan in place with a three year outlook so investment decisions can be made.
3. Agree the plan with Venkys and let a new professional united board (including independent business people and two fans) get on with running the club, reporting back to Venkys quarterly.
3. Recruit a suitably experienced manager with a track record of promotion and who knows how to work with limited resources and to get the best out of players. Not Appleton....
4. Give him a hard working enthusiastic and stable back room staff.
5. Do a proper review of the team and ensure there are quality players (they dont need to Phil Jones standard) who are motivated, play for each other and know whats expected of them.
It can't be that difficult can it??????

Thats a well run business aint it, 24 million in debt and growing year on year. So they decide to sell off some assets to pay off the debt. Isn't that just good business sense? The loons on here need to realise that everyone in football wants a sugar daddy, an abramovic to write off mounds and mounds of debt every year so they can keep buying the worlds best players. once again this site is polluted with knuckle dragging hill monkeys - the most contributions, so far, today come from a yorkie that calls itself "george whitebread",
we know it doesn't go to games and prefers to stay on rovers sites, whilst the team it pretends to support is playing - it takes its name from an obnoxious yorkshire stereotype comedy character and visits other LT stories pretending to be that other stereotypical obnoxious yorkie - keith lemon.
not an original thought in its head the person is highly likely to be very lonely and apart from the samaritans - rovers supporters are probably the only other social group it interacts with each day.
maybe we can arrange for it to be club mascot for the charlton game as it obviously loves all things rovers.
i have many friends who are dingles and none of them are anything like this educationally sub-normal phyto-plankton. in evolutionary terms it is at the stage where the first amino acids were formed. most burnley fans seem pretty reasonable to me but sh.itehead doesn't seem to understand banter or perhaps it doesn't even know what rivalry is as it probably has no interest in the club it pretends to support.
why such idiots come on here is totally beyond me. i guess individuals like them show the true power of the internet and demonstrates the old adage about giving a team of monkeys a keyboard and they will eventually come up with the complete works of Shakespeare.

1 get on their hands and knees and beg john Williams, Goodman and Finn to come back.
This won’t happen as the above 3 won’t now touch us with a barge pole.
2 number 1 having failed appoint a competent board with the ability to run the club.
3 with proper leadership within the club quickly sack shabby, Shaw and Agnew.
4 go out on to the pitch at ewood in person and apologise, then beg for forgiveness promising never to step foot in the ground again.
5 appoint an actual manager for the first time.
6 start to focus on building a decent balanced team.
If those criteria are fulfilled then that’s a start. But will they do any of that nooooooooooooooooooo
oooooooooooooooooooo

oooooooooooooooo!!!!

They’ll just get their last parachute payment then leave the club to rot. Which in fairness won’t be much of difference to how it is now.

Think they had too much faith in the common sense of Rovers supporters as a whole. The way Venkys have been treated by the media in the UK and Rovers "fans," they'd be entitled to asset strip the club and sell the land to the Department for Education. Helping Rovers "fans" get an education and hopefully resulting in them becoming less confused souls.

What lets venkys down is that they sacked a manager who would have kept us in the prem , the reasons 4 this was that the football was horrid,he was on 2 much money, had a soft spot for expensive over aged player and wanted a big squad....all the things that venkys want 2 change, and on sacking him they have appointed a caretaker who had one good result (liverpool), allowed him to continue when we lost vital games and it was becoming clear we were going down, appointed ex player with no knowledge of championship football and have now gone for another who lacks experience at this level.
Hiring a PR firm sends all the wrong messages, it says that Venkys are more concerned about image than they are about taking the club forward. If Agnew can't handle the club's PR then he is surplus to requirements, he should leave along with Shebby. Shebby has contributed nothing but more bad decisions, he would make an excellent member of BRAG.
Success on the pitch would solve everything, here's hoping Appleton can bring about a miracle.
the appointment of a PR company is a joke as venkys have never communicated with the fans and have never outlined what their long term plans for the football club r....... too much stuff going on inside the club with no one too explain why 2 the paying public ..... ie: Nelsen is not fit.... sell him 2 spurs and he plays right away..... Roberts and Salgardo the same..... when its all about age and money .... at least the manager of Bolton has had the guts to let the fans know this ....Petrov.
Message 2 Venkys......... Talk 2 the fans....get rid of the 3 non-communicators .... Singh, Shaw & Agnew and if u r not afraid of people knowing your plans then communicate them.... All we want is honesty

This lot are what I call evolutionary deadends, no longer any use, can't adapt to the world and will definitely become extinct. You can see how their language is expiring. Same phrases no matter what the subject. Talk about rovers being embarrassing, these cretin surely are an embarrassment to Burnley FC?
my one and only comment about "george whitebread"
once again this site is polluted with knuckle dragging hill monkeys - the most contributions, so far, today come from a yorkie that calls itself "george whitebread",
we know it doesn't go to games and prefers to stay on rovers sites, whilst the team it pretends to support is playing - it takes its name from an obnoxious yorkshire stereotype comedy character and visits other LT stories pretending to be that other stereotypical obnoxious yorkie - keith lemon.
not an original thought in its head the person is highly likely to be very lonely and apart from the samaritans - rovers supporters are probably the only other social group it interacts with each day.
maybe we can arrange for it to be club mascot for the charlton game as it obviously loves all things rovers.
i have many friends who are dingles and none of them are anything like this educationally sub-normal phyto-plankton. in evolutionary terms it is at the stage where the first amino acids were formed. most burnley fans seem pretty reasonable to me but sh.itehead doesn't seem to understand banter or perhaps it doesn't even know what rivalry is as it probably has no interest in the club it pretends to support.
why such idiots come on here is totally beyond me. i guess individuals like them show the true power of the internet and demonstrates the old adage about giving a team of monkeys a keyboard and they will eventually come up with the complete works of Shakespeare.

Success on the pitch would solve everything, here's hoping Appleton can bring about a miracle.
the appointment of a PR company is a joke as venkys have never communicated with the fans and have never outlined what their long term plans for the football club r....... too much stuff going on inside the club with no one too explain why 2 the paying public ..... ie: Nelsen is not fit.... sell him 2 spurs and he plays right away.....
If they had nothing to hide they would have nothing to be afraid of.

There's more chance of Max Clifford getting Gary Glitter presenting on Cbeebies.
Each and every Blackburn fan attending under the Venky's reign is complicit in destroying Jack Walkers legacy. Shame on you.

All rumours point to Rovers needing experience to keep afloat, so they get inexperience, then sack him and get more inexperience, whilst having to pay off other clubs and use money for bad decisions.
Then they want someone to make up good stories to tell everybody to get them happy.
We have people with very poor reputations in very high places, it's even more impossible than getting promoted in a tough league with an inexperienced manager with a poor track record.

There is so much momentum behind being negative, I can understand why it's then difficult to be positive. But now is the time to get behind Appleton and the team.

Well that should work wonders... but why London? And shouldn't they start by trying to improve their image to their club's actual supporters - you don't need to hire some snooty divisive metropolitan firm to do that.
"After a series of PR disasters during their Rovers regime, Venky’s have called on The Sports PR Company to drive the way the club handle the press."
Oh, so what your saying is they just want to change how the press is portraying them and not actually improve the way they run things at all. By my own judgement it would appear that the press have been very light on them considering the barracking Rovers fans have had in recent years.

Probably get slated here but some of these doomongers and naysayers need to get a grip on reality.
There is so much momentum behind being negative, I can understand why it's then difficult to be positive. But now is the time to get behind Appleton and the team.
"yes we're run by iditots"
You pointed out that we are run by idiots, what more is there to say? You want idiots to do the right thing. And you condone calling geniune Rovers fans for knowing what you know and being more angry than you.
I feel for your incapacity, bless you.
Rovers well run, now being drained and taken down at the same time, nothing to do with banking crash, are you keeping up?
You are seeing the destruction of a mighty club, and you are calling people who don't like it being torn apart,in turn allowing your Mrs Desai's team more time to squeeze any remaining publicity from their destruction. But you probably want to get back to your game of pool, don't let anyone stop you.
These appear to be the statements you have to have in your locker from the BRAG camp.
1 Jack Walker will be spinning in his grave because of XYZ
2 This once proud club is now an XYZ
3 The Venkys are asset stripping
4 Shaw agnew shebby and XYZ out
5 They are a bunch of Shysters
6 If they appoint XYZ we will step up the campaign ( what campaign would that be, the GET THE PREMIER LEAGUE GLORY HUNTERS BACK TO EWOOD campaign)
7Rovers have been systematically destroyed.
Please feel free to use these statements in no particular order, as the more you type them, the more likely you will get the club given to you for free, just before entering the looney toon ward.

Does it really take a PR company to tell them what they need to do? The whole country is telling them. Instead of seeing the press coverage as negative, why dont they listen to whats being said and then respond to it? They could start by having a presence in the running of the club, not necessarily physical but vocally would show they are interested and involved. Making statements for instance. Has anybody ever heard Mrs Desai speak? Iv heard Bilaji talking about how we will finish 8th next season (as we were heading down the PL) and then Venkatash rambling on about how he couldnt eat his tea two nights when we got relegated. I know they arent English but quite honestly, Indians of their standing usually have a good grasp of English. Our club is in the hands of one mute woman and her simpleton brothers. Just for your childish mind, Rovers had a good value for money club with excellent history. Decisions were made and the club was very well respected and was managing it's debt and nobody feared for it's future.
Your Mum came along and loving cricket but needing to further her business name in Europe she used some spare cash to buy the club and called it her baby.
Made massive cost cutting measures ,(this is probably about the time that you became interested in football) and sold anything that was valuable. I bet you had a lovely pram. There hasn't been a single important positive decision since regarding the benefit of the football club, which has moved irreversibly backwards.
You don't have to be a banker or business proffessional to see the neglect and utter deriliction of duties performed by the owners, just common sense. But from your posts this seems to be in short supply.
For your information, they haven't finished yet, and nobody knows the outcome, but even the public who slated Rovers fans last year are now biting their tongue and uttering their astonishment at the circus that is Rovers.

In my opinion Venky's have to simplify the executive structure, hire an experienced manager with his own backroom staff, who would straighten up the defence, increase the pass success ratio and start getting positive results. We need more defenders in this transfer window and to get rid of surplus midfield players that don't even get used as substitutes!...
I wish Appleton success, but I am furthermore puzzled at the latest appointment. Our last three managers (Kean, Berg and Appleton) don't have a win ratio of more than 40%. For me there were good candidates available, but we missed the opportunity.
At the moment there are two available that in my opinion would at least take us to the playoff zone: Curbishley and Billy Davies. I suppose Venky's didn't opt for them, because they are known for standing firm for their own opinion.
Finally, as someone else pointed out, the only way forward is either a radical overhaul in the structure and/or change of ownership that would again lead to that radical overhaul. I am sure many fans would love to own a share of their favourite club and have voting rights.

I read a book in which it is stated that the long term debt of a company should be not more than the net revenue for 3 years. Even though the Venky's have worked on the debt aspect, the Revenue aspect is getting gradually more worrying. Our revenue gates are decreasing - we have average attendance of less than 46% of capacity. And when you think that in the beginning Venky's were talking about increasing the stadium capacity, it's really sad...We are going to receive the last parachute payments on TV rights and then if we don't get back to the Premier league soon, it gets very difficult.

This hatred for Venky's that is portrayed by some and voiced with a will to fall on their sword and watch Rovers tumble into non-league status to be rid of them before they would return to Ewood, at the same time damning those who attend as traitors lining Venky's pockets is the divide between two very distinct camps.
I don't lose sleep seeing the empty seats at Ewood. I've been around long enough to know that if Venky's pulled off the unimaginable and got us back to the premiership, in large, a lot of that would resolve itself despite what many like to think and verbalise frequently.
What I do find worrying is the emotive language used to deflect any suggestion of conspiracy on the part of those who openly without hesitation or need of factual evidence, are happy to accuse Venky's of corruption.

Granted you are correct in that Blackburn were in debt, and yes that debt was slowly increasing - but in no way unusually to any other similar club in the league. And for your information, nothing has changed, those 2 facts still stand today.
But here's what has changed...
The club has replaced experienced players on high salaries with.... newer, less talented ones on higher wages like Gomes and Murphy. And is breaking transfer records AFTER we've just been relegated.
We no longer have an astute manager. Souness, Allardyce and Hughes all kept Blackburn competitive by spotting a bargain or developing one of our own and inevitably selling them once their values had increased - Santa Cruz, Bentley, Warnock, Bellamy, etc.
And in not having a quality manager, we've been relegated. We're about to miss out on the most lucrative TV deal in premier league history.
So when people talk about the club being previously run well, it was - unless you're in denial. And to somehow suggest we're making better decisions, either on or off the field, under this regime is simply outrageous.

Experts in crisis management?
The club needs leadership. Every successful business/organisatio
n does!
I cannot see a return for Williams et al ever being on the cards.
Those who hope for this do so in vain IMHO. Venkys were the reason they departed in the first instance. Williams left in a dignified manner - no doubt wrapped up in a Compromise Agreement too - but there was no smoke without fire.
We all sensed something was awry at the time and then lo and behold the triumvirate's letter to Mrs Desai was leaked by Nick Harris from Sporting Intelligence and we were given a little insight into the goings on behind the scene.
BRFC desperately needs leadership at board level and a managerial level. Could Williams et al deliver? Absolutely. Would they want to? I very much doubt whilst Venkys are involved.
More frustratingly perhaps, will Venkys move to appoint others. No. And even if they did would anyone want the job? Well, anyone worth their salt wouldn't. Venkys' reputation is too tarnished. They have let it go too far. Too little too late.

I'm sure you and the thousands of other loyal "supporters" will be down at AFC Darwen, where you'll be ground sharing in a couple of years time, to watch the newly formed AFC Blackburn Rovers playing Barnoldswick Town in the Dr Martin cheese and onion crisp league 1 reserves.George.White.Bread wrote:You should know about polishing turds Georgina - you daft tw4ts have been attempting to polish turds and invisible trophies for decades. Probably get slated here but some of these doomongers and naysayers need to get a grip on reality.
And it looks like Villa will be following our lead because they are going the same way, they too are no longer a BIG CLUB.

just a reminder for all the folks who are still unnaware of the current climate surrounding uk clubs,,first of all, only the self sustaining clubs can survive ,,the lesser clubs will fold without a benefactor propping them up.tv has killed the game and there is no way back for the small town clubs, and those like brfc are im afraid destined for the scrapheap brought about prematurely by the antics of its current owners,,apart from shieks and oil billionaires who can bankroll the clubs for the foreseable future but even that has a shelf life, we better start realising that all sport perticularly football is living on borrowed time,
Sure... when a player is exceptionally talented and brings 10,000 fans to the stadium just to watch him perform (ie Shearer in 93-94-95), then they're worth big bucks. Maybe even a salary twice the average in the team.
But overall, players shouldn't be earning 20-50k a week for being a first teamer....it's a recipe doomed to fail unless income from merchandise can match that sort of squad cost.
Aussie Rules Football has a great business model that not only evens out the competition (to a reasonable extent) but also means that almost all clubs run at a profit. There's a salary cap on each club of about $9m per year player payments.... and any third party sponsorships for individual players go through an independent governing body for approval. The end result is that teams tend to be far more even across the competition...and it's quite possible for a team finishing lower on the table one season to burst into contention the next. Very good model

All the publicity in the world will not undo the damage the Venky's have done to the reputation of Blackburn Rovers. The only answer to the problem is for the Venky's to GET OUT!
Those Venky lovers should WAKE UP.......
