Singh says only short-term deal on offer for new boss

BLACKBURN Rovers' global advisor Shebby Singh has said Blackburn Rovers will only offer any new manager a short-term deal initially.

As Rovers continue their search for Henning Berg's successor, Singh insists Rovers will only reward success.

He said: "At this moment in time we are looking to offer a short term contract, a six-month contract with specific targets and upon achieving those targets, it will trigger off a longer term contract.

"So we are looking  to reward success and not failure."

What a ridiculous statement from the shebmeister. Who of any 'worth' is gonna come here on a six month contract..! Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck maybe? The thing they should have done is to leave Gary Bowyer in charge as caretaker manager until the end of the season and take it from there. Crazy days just got crazier.

but for that Shebby, you either need to offer a bumper pay package (for a good manager) or an average package for someone deemed unsuitable for most other clubs....hang on, you know someone by the name of Pete, right?

wow, you're a financial wizard Shebby! we are so lucky to have you and soon we won't need you (next season) since we'll be bankrupt!

so it's Taylor then, even though Shebby denied it. Also, he said Dunny was injured, then someone tweeted Gary Hickson saying it was a lie. Hickson wouldn't read the name of the author of the tweet because he said 'it would be obvious who it was'. Obviously it was from someone known to all Rovers fans. Could Shebby be telling porkies? That would be a shock!

This whole situation is a mess brought on by themselves and as far as not rewarding for failure. They have just done that big style with Henning, they may sruggle to get a top guy with a 6 months contract. It appears to be going from one extreme to another after being bitten. Don't know how this mess is going to pan out. What will happen will happen maybe it's time to stop bothering as stability seems a mile away.

in a different world a 6 month contract would be ideal - but football management does not work like that.

the only one i can remember doing this was very terribles at middlesbro and leeds(?). at boro he was brought in to rescue bryan robson.

seems to me that taylor is the choice of the adams family (despite denial by shabby) as they want a name. my guess is that all of the uk clowns (groucho, tweedles dee and dum) realise this would be more madness and are trying to dissuade them.

if it is to be a 6 month contract (with an extension option subject to targets being made - shebby's words) then the incoming manager will not be working at the moment in any profile position - thinking out loud - davis, reid (shabby pal) venables, robson, southgate, sven(?), hughes, pep (only joking), souness, kean (now that would be funny) di matteo, mcallister, jewell, coyle (anderson though), keane, grant (oh dear).

6 months short-term contract ?

Looks like Venkys are saying 2 things -

1 - They doubt they can make the right decision (any Rovers fan could have told them that 18 months ago).

2 - They have no confidance that their "advisors" can give them "proper" advice.

I still don't know why Rovers fans are so anti Billy Davis ??

You want an experienced, championship manager who, like Souness will stand up to interfiering morons like Shebby.

BD has guided 3 different clubs to the play offs in the championship - christ, how much more sucess and experience do you want/need than that.

Rovers fans need to get REAL, we arnt going to get players like Samba nor are we going to attract TOP, in vogue managers.

So apart from Hughes and Davies, who would realistically tick all the required boxes ??

And please don't say Bowyer - good luck whilst he's in charge but he is a COACH, he DOSENT want the job, he will have Shebby sticking his or in, making him pick players/leave others out - Hughes/Davies would not accept this - and that is what we need.

A manager who can be allowed to manage WITHOUT any interferance.

Best advice Venkys can take right now - Shaw, Agnew, Singh - sack the lot of them and replace them with 1 PROPER CEO like Tom Finn or Paul Hunt.

Nice try toran, but the only one looking for the door is Charlie the bricklayer and you know it.

Personally have no issues with the 6 month deal, its how clubs are going to operate soon enough anyway we've had it in the real world for a long time now anyway.

Its a darn sight preferable to the Kean fiasco that's for sure. Disappointed about the transfer window decision, could be costly in the long term, but whoever comes in needs to make those decisions anyway.

You are not going to find your soldier of fortune to give a quick fix. Football is about building a team tjrough consistency and continuity, unfortunately there are plenty out there who will play to your ego, promise the world, take the money and deliver nothing. Just shows how little Singh understands about the English game. However the wind is due to change direction so tomorrow he will be taking his time to attract the right man and bring him in on a long term deal.

How do you "build" a football squad if you keep changing manager every 6 months, as each new manager will want to keep bringing in his "players".

Chelsea have taken RB for 1 reason and 1 reason only - they want PEP G - and he won't be available to start work until summer.

They havent done it because they think 6 months contracts for managers are a good business model.

Christ, a week ago, we ALL wanted an experienced manager, and stability - now half the fans change their opinion as fast as Shebby and Venkys and will take short term coaches, no backroom staff, Shebby doing the transfers and a different manager ever 6 months so no prospect of any strategic medium or longterm planning - complete and utter bonkers !

Yes I agree that Keans and prob HB payouts were painfull for Venkys but it is NOT the way to run a sucessfull club.

If it was, why dosent any other, properly run club in western Europe do it then ? - because err, its not the way to "build a squad" or get "stability".

And don't say "Chelsea" - for every "chelsea" I could name 50 clubs that have managers on 18months+ contracts and also when Chelsea get Pep G in the summer do you think they'll be offering him a 6 months contract ? - I very much doubt it.

In my opinion this changes nothing.

We don't have a long line of top managers queuing up for an interview because they have a burning passion to manage our Club. That's just not going to happen.

I very much doubt that we will get a manager who is currently employed at another club. Why would an employed manager run the risk of joining the Ewood circus?

If there are unemployed managers out there who fancy the Ewood post as their next career move then let them prove themselves and earn a longer contract.

However, it is vital that the targets to be set are realistic. If we are going to say "promotion or sack" then we can forget about attracting any manger of quality and will only get chancers who don't expect to be here longer than six months. Getting into the play-offs this season might be an acceptable target given the time that has already been wasted by Shebby himself with his failure in appointing Henning Berg.

What I don't understand however is why Shebby feels the need to make this policy public. He really does conduct himself like a headless chicken.

Reading the comments on here makes me realise we've become no better than the likes of Newcastle and Tottenham fans - never happy. We'd not be happy if we got Ferguson (we'd say he's too old), Mourinho (too foreign), Wenger (no history of success) or Ancellotti (see Mourinho).

It's time to wake up. We had success whilst Jack Walker was able to bankroll it - and even he always said he wanted the club to be able to finance itself (ie he wasn't willing to invest forever). We were lucky that we had Williams in charge previously and he did a fabulous job of keeping us in the Prem for much longer than we should have been able to given our resources (or lack thereof). We needed a buyer and there was noone out there willing to pay for us.

We don't have the best owners, but we don't have the worst (we migt think we do, but ask Leeds and Portsmouth fans if they think we do....). We have a decent squad that, given some luck in the manager decision making department, might even be able to get us back into the Prem this year or next. Or they might not. In which case we'll stay in the Championship - but I've followed Rovers in the Third Division and enjoyed it, so surely we can still enjoy watching and supporting Rovers - till death do us part, for better or for worse - in the Championship?

It's true to say the fear of intervention by owners / global advisers might put some managers off, but not all I'll bet. It's equally true that, if Bowyer was given the job, and subsequently lost three on the bounce he would start to get grief from that extremely noisy minority that seems to be happier when they can moan rather than support - that will put some managers off too. I tell you what will make them want to come more than anything else - we'll pay them a wage, and it's a job.

A six month (ie to the end of the season) contract with clauses that reward success sounds like a very sensible option to me. Even the most popular 'candidates' might not work (for those hoping for Hughes, go and ask City and QPR fans if they'd have him back - and ask yourself when our defence started to be poor).

In any case, we'll still be Rovers and I'll still be supporting us. It's time for positive supporters to also speak up on these blogs and not let the negative moaning win every time - lets make the next manager welcome and support him in what will be a very difficult time.

As for Venkys they have bought Blackburn Rovers FC, who's fault was that ? It was Walkers wanted to flogg it off with Robert Coar's backing. There was no American or Arab Billionaires were intrested in buying BRFC even after two years BRFC was looking for a buyer. To all my fellow Rovers supporters we hve no other choice but to accept Venkys as the owner of BRFC.Jack Walker spent a fortune in BRFC in 1990s.Alan Shearer £3.5 million ,Sutton £5 milion and £7 Andy Cole.Football has moved to anothe level today where top players cost £20 to £30 million, so BRFC cannot compete with this sort of money. We just hope for BRFC right now being a small town club with 25,000 crowds,we cannot compete with big city clubs anymore.
Yes but you're just defending Venkys cos they are Indian like you - you fail to mention their TERRIBLE TRACK RECORD, their complete and utter DIS-RESPECT for US, the fans, their DIS-RESPECT for the clubs heritage, the fact they have made the club a laughing stock around the world etc etc.

I bet you wouldnt be so quick to defend those "loons from Pune" if they were from Pakistan, or Denmark or Australia, you do so because you are biased towards them.
Venky has made terrible decision by sacking Sam Allardyce, i am not defending Venkys on mistakes they have made over the last two years or so.Kean should never have been appointed Rover's manager.Had they kept Allardyce BRFC would have not got relegated.Do you think i would put Venkys before BRFC? If i can turn the clock back two years ago and tell Robert Coar and the Walkers not to sell this club to foreigners ,Robert Coar and Walkers sold the club for Dollars .Did they not care about the fans who support this club through thick and thin.Right now we do not have a choice as BRFC fan myself ,i am gutted that Rovers were relagated and hope Venkys now appoint a right manager and a manager who has all the decision about day to day running of this club and the players he wants and the he does not want .I think Sebby Singh should back off a bit and stay in his Boardroom and not making decisions on the about football business .The new manager should be in charge of footballing decision.Ambromiwich at Chelsea making the same mistakes like Shebby Singh.

6 month contract is a good idea. Doesn't Appleton at Blackpool have something similar? It rules out the possbility of a big pay-off if things don't work out. i suspect that this is the compromise to get whoever (hopefully not Taylor) in, even though half the executive don't want it. In other words A is saying to B " I'll go along with you as long as it's only a short-term". I think we could get a decent manager anyway. After all if the bloke has any confidence in his own ability he should have the courage to take it on. But Taylor would be a bad appointment commercially because the fans would soon come to dislike him as much as Kean and attendances would become even worse. He's a dead loss.

Global Football Advisor? This seems like a title invented to justify a wholly undeserved salary of no-doubt ridiculous proportions. The club needs someone who knows the Premiership / Championship. who knows about football and offers good advice. On all three counts he is pathetically lacking. Exactly how can he justify his position? His mere existence lends even more weight to the argument that the Venkys have no idea of how to run a football club. With every stupid utterance he only makes matters worse. Get rid of him, appoint an experienced manager, get some results on the board (we've won two without a 'manager' so what does that tell you about the sense behind appointing Berg?) and let's move towards a successful and Venkys-free future.

Jesus all this panicing over nothing, didn't mark hughes sign a short term contract with Fulham answer, yes he did. It works out for both parties. They see what we are like and we see what they are like.
We're already paying up two contracts, what is with you cheeky monkeys. This could be just what is needed for someone like Hughes to have a get out of jail card. Comes in, dependant on which way it goes depends on what happens next.

Cant believe sheppy thinks we dont need to strengthen for the remainder of the season, have they ost the stomach to support fully for the promotion push..or are they trying to get up on the cheap..

everyone knows there isnt enough quality in the squad to do that, there needs to be more leaders on the pitch, we still require players who can actually cross the ball, accurate in ball distribution and defenders who stay focussed for 90 minutes, theres nobody who can deny there has been a defensive problem all season and definetly need better central defenders than dann and hanley

The only thing we done is brought in one rookie player who was not good enough for Man utd.who still alot to learn and slightly raw, if Rovers dont bring in new faces, dont think other teams will wait,,in there aim to mount a successful promotion push top teams are beginning to invest ... rovers will be left behind and they might regret it if were overrun with injuries/suspensions and fatigue sets in for the older players with the logjam of fixtures.

Yes, let's all just accept the disaster that has befallen our club and "know our place".

Venkys are again flying in the face of convention. Some may say it's brave; I say it's stupid, especially for people moving into a new industry. They've already decimated the management structure which had disastrous effects on and off the pitch now they are trying to get a credible manager on some half a$$ed commission basis. How many other clubs, successful or otherwise, operate in this way? I'll let you in on a secret; f@ck all.

Singh said in his interview on 606 he had been watching Rovers for years but couldn't see a philosophy at the club. So is this it? Six months contracts for the manager (or coach, as he will no doubt be referred to)? How is he supposed to build a "philosophy" in six months?

As for Hughes and defence; when he came in we were shipping goals. The first thing he did was make us defensively sound. We had one of the worst defensive records that season before he came in and one of the best over the games he was in charge. Explain "when our defence started to be poor". That saved us from relegation before he went on to change the way we played when he could start from the beginning of the following season with a clean slate. We couldn't get Hughes anyway; he sill has some credibility left and is not that stupid, especially for six months.

He does seem to get a little giddy when there is cash flying around but we all know that wouldn't be the case. Like I say though, he isn't daft enough to consider being ringmaster at the Ewood circus.

In the meantime, get your facts right before dissing one of the finest managers we have had in recent history.

And nobody is saying we expect to be challenging the big clubs anymore. We are realistic, survival in the Prem was realistic. If you haven't noticed, Venkys are the reason it has now become nothing more than a pipe dream.

Dan11 says...

The comments here are absolute tripe in the most part. Lots of clubs use rolling contracts to the end the season for their managers and this is extended for the next season. Lots of successful clubs who have got promoted and some in the premier league have used these contractual terms for their managers. This is actually a decent idea and good way forward, especially an good idea given the pay outs they must have to pay to Kean and Henning Berg. We offer the new manager to the end of the season, and they get another 12 months should both parties be happy, and so on and so on.
-
However, it must be the right man. That means not Peter Taylor. To the poster asking for Billy Davies, he was sacked from his last job at Forest with them in the bottom three. He has not led both Preston and Forest to the playoffs in every season in charge and since the Forest sacking he has been out of work. That was quiet sometime ago now as well.

Off the top of my head. Newcastle did with Pardew, to give him a trial when appointing him. Blackpool gave Holloway, a rolling contract every year. Palace with Freedman. Man U assess Sir Alex at the end of every season now with a rolling 12 month extension. That is just off the top of my head with no research and I would estimate that about 20-30% of managers have these terms, because contracts are not worth the paper they are written on if a manager wants to leave...

Whatever the good points or bad points might be about recruiting a Manager on a six month contract, why advertise the fact? It's like putting all your cards on the table in a poker game.

Interview candidates, find one you like and who also likes you and then start talking about terms. This naive blurting, possibly to try and engage with the fans, does absolutely nothing to attract the right man - it is certainly not in the best interests of the club.

Well said Cheshire!

As well as being a place for the occasional sensible discussion this site also serves as a refuge for the manically depressed.

Some people seem to think that we have a divine right to be in the top flight; the Walker family blew a big hole through that idea when they sold the Club to the current owners but it has to be said that potential, worthy buyers were conspicuous by their absence.

The most comical posters on here are those who scream "VENKYS OUT" seemingly ignoring the fact that Venkys paid many millions of their own money to buy the Club.

Until they decide otherwise we are stuck with Venkys and the tragic mismanagement they have brought to the Club. Shebby, their ludicrous mouthpiece causes offence to all Rovers fans every time he opens his mouth in public.

So, it is a tough time to be a Rovers fan.

There have been many tough times before; in those days the moaners swapped sob stories in the pub and at the ground before the match. T'was ever thus.

It is gratifying though to note that the numbers of moaners on this site are very small. The same names appear over and over bleating their complaints and sustaining each other in a feeding frenzy of despond.

We need positivity on the pitch and in the stands to reverse the recent downward spiral of performances and results. Ewood has rarely been an intimidating place for other clubs to come and play and it is music to their ears when the booers and moaners can be heard above the vocal support for the home team.

None of the current mess is of the fans' making but we can do a lot to help ourselves.

Starting on Saturday we should get Ewood bouncing and do our bit to kindle the small sparks of recovery which recent performances have shown.

In any case, we'll still be Rovers and I'll still be supporting us. It's time for positive supporters to also speak up on these blogs and not let the negative moaning win every time - lets make the next manager welcome and support him in what will be a very difficult time. I whole heartedly agree with everything you have said, and hope more people will do so. Lets remove all this overwhelming negativity generated on this website by the moaners and groaners. Who are against anything being done at Blackburn Rovers. I dont think even Jack Walker would be immune from the constant abuse of these people, if he were still alive, and all the good things he did for us, would be forgotten.
People can moan, groan, shout abuse whatever. Venkys own the club at present and they call the shots. Bolton and Wolves relegated with us have less points than us. It is not easy in championship at all three clubs have found out. Venkys and Shebby are at last using brains and giving prospective managers a probationary period before given a long term contract. Well done Shebby for permanent signing of Josh King, good player. Looks like people are going to have to get used to Venkys as they have said they are here for the long term.

Quite agree. Listened to the whole interview this morning, and it seems that the "six months contract" overshadiowed the more worrying admission, which was that there would be no more transfer activity in this window?

We've all stated that we need to shore up defence and midfield, surely that should be the more worrying prospect that even Sven will find it an immennse challenge to get this lot into a play-off winning squad?

I believe that falls very neatly into the category of 'tell them what you think they want to hear', which is Chapter 1 in the "Indian Book of Business etiquette"

Chapter 2 is "Never admit a mistake"

Chapter 3 is "Always employ the cheapest man for the job".

Sky announce Bowyer in until end of January. Or in other words until window closes thereby avoiding any buys, but allowing Shebby to get rid of any player he can.

So the club has admitted that it does not have sufficient confidence in the judgement of it's executives to allow them to offer a contract of over 6 months. I take this as a positive sign that they are learning their lessons and are aware of their limitations but why is this statement coming from Shebby the Snake? Surely this should be coming from Shaw.
Also I hope they will introduce a six month Season Ticket from the start of next season so the fans can reward success or failure by renewing or walking away! Assuming there are any Season Ticket holders left of course!

Sure you wanted to add a bit more........
You seem to be convincing yourself of the present ' happy' situation that you desribe at Rovers and one other fool.seems to believe you....
Most Rovers fans though face the real situation, not the one described by you, but the club facing an uncertain future confirmed by both national and local press.....
Yes, you had better add to your comment you may convince yourself that you are right cos no other one believes you(except for the fool).....check the gate Sat

I have listened to Gary Bowyers interview several times now and not once has he said he is not interested in the job full time. Sky Sports have said he isn't interested. Maybe if people would make their own minds up rather than believe every bit of media hype they see or hear they would have a better understanding.

Be careful what you wish for, members of our so called supporters trusts are very close to Shebby and I know first hand there is a very influential member of one of the groups is a drinking partner of Steve K@*ns.

Spot on comment.

If anyone does come in say February and fails to meet Shebby's 'targets' (presumably making the play-offs, which is v unlikely the way we have played so far) then no doubt he'll be off too and the whole circus starts again.

Let Bowyer remain in charge til the end of the season. And then the priority is:

* a left back
* a box to box midfield player
* a right sided midfielder who can cross the ball

Ok, I think we should make recomendations to BRFC as we're football fans and we see or hear of players doing well. I'm sure we know a player or two out there in the Football league who in their opinion good be a good player for BRFC.

Lets start pointing out the players in the lower leagues who could be good signings for Rovers.
Tony McMahon Shfld utd
Andrew Haliday Midbrgh

who is .......Tony McMahon...??

if we need a good young defender who is tough and has ability then maybe you should consider Tony McMahon who is at Sheffield utd but ex Middbrg.
