Blackburn Rovers Blog: Silence the boo boys for something to cheer
8:07am Tuesday 30th October 2012 in Sport
By Dan Clough, Reporter
WHEN will the booing culture at Rovers come to an end? It is getting pathetic now.
For two consecutive games, Danny Murphy has been booed before he has even touched the ball.
And on Saturday, one of our better players this season, Colin Kazim-Richards, was booed because he missed a penalty.
Yes I know, Danny Murphy’s performances have not been good enough for what we reportedly pay him.
And yes, when Kaz snatched the ball from Jordan Rhodes to claim the penalty for himself he really should have slotted it home.
But to boo these players is just plain daft. When Steve Kean left, it was supposed to lead to a positive new start, at least for the fans.
Granted, with Venky’s in charge the bigger problem still remains, but we can at least try to do our part. And in all honesty, this booing culture started before we had heard of Venky’s.
Keith Andrews felt the full force of the nastier side of Ewood Park during his time at the club.
He was another that would be booed before he had touched the ball, yet at times he was far from the worst player on the pitch.
Booing your own team is just self-defeating. The fans should be there to cheer on the team. To encourage them. To try to help them succeed.
I know it can be frustrating at times when players are overpaid and underperforming, but there just isn’t any point booing.
Booing will not inspire the side to improve, it will just make things worse. Which in turn will lead to further poor performances and further booing.
It is a vicious circle that a large number of Rovers fans have been sucked into. I have made similar comments before, in these pages, on Twitter and even in the stands, and I am often criticised for it.
But I just cannot understand why people want to pay £20 or £30 a game to stand there and boo, jeer, swear and criticise their own team.
Meanwhile, it hasn’t been particularly pretty on the pitch of late, but at least we look more solid at the back.
Consecutive home wins were a welcome relief but the two clean sheets are particularly pleasing.
Our defence had been very leaky so far this season and it looks as though Eric Black may have started working on that area.
Now we just need to rediscover the scoring boots we had on in the early stages of the season.
Hopefully a new manager will be in place soon, and the foundation they have to build on will be stronger than what Black was left with.
The caretaker may not be the man we want to take over as manager permanently, but he appears to be doing enough to merit being kept on when the new man comes in.

I though that when Kean went that would be that but they have realised that if they scream enough abuse at an individual they can drive anyone out of Ewood.
I bought my season ticket at the very last minute basically because my daughter kept nagging me to do so as she wanted to continue going, but on Saturday she didn't go to the game preferring to go swimming with her friends. I didn't force the issue.
I have been a Rovers fan and supporter for 40 years and a ST holder since the 1980's, I have supported them through thick and thin and would never ever think of booing a Rovers player irrespective of how they were playing.
But I really don't look forward to going down to Ewood anymore, part of this is because I hate what Venky's have done to my Club which once sold itself quite rightly as "The Pride of Lancashire" but is now a laughing stock across the world.
But the greater part is that the boo boys have taken over at Ewood.
It's no longer "fun" to go there, the atmosphere is appauling and atmosphere at sporting venues is always created by the fans, sadly some so called Rovers fans remain so blinkered by hatred they have forgotten how to support their team, their club.

Anyone trying to suggest that the fans can negatively affect a player's performance is simply providing them with ready-made excuses.
When you see police officers or paramedics being continually professional in the most extreme situations of provocation, it kind of puts these overpaid primadonnas to shame, when they complain about a handful of boo boys.
Man up lads.

At the Wolves game it was the away supporters that were booing Murphy. I was in the middle of the stand near the top behind the net and the booing was coming from my left.

It is them that has tainted BRFC's reputation and standing within the game.
The supports reaction to all of this is borne totally out of frustration.
The players are on small fortunes in having the luxury of being professional footballers, and seeig more money than any one of us supporters will see in our lifetime.
I can have no real sympathy for guys who earn that much and are unable to handle 'the pressure'.
Having said that, the time has come to stop the booing, no question, as it is totally counter productive and makes them appear 'brainless'.
For rthis club to move forward a positive support base is essential. Without Venkys would be nice, but with them if that is how it is to be.

Dan, couldn't have put it better myself, the boo boys have destroyed the atmosphere at Ewood and are continuing to do so. Whilst its never good to hear any player being booed, alot of what is going on is a hang-over from the Kean era (anyone who thought all our problems would disapear when he did is very naive).
Unfortunately all his "leutenants" are still here -
Bradley Orr - a man who has backed Kean fully since the moment he came to the club and insulted ALL Rovers fans when he came out and still defended the useless cretin after the Wigan game - well, unfortunately you reep what you sow and Orr should leave this club NOW.
Murphy - Again, I don't agree with booing Murphy but he is another one with strong SK ties and also he critisied and slandered this club which was reported nationally at the time. Now he thinks he can come here without appologising for dissing us on £2m a year and then put in performances with 70% effort - I'm sorry but if you put all those things together then some fans WILL always be quick to have a go.
In order to move forward properly, everyone tainted with the SK brush has to be moved on - then and ONLY then can we really move forward together.
People such as Agnew, Black, Hendry and Orr have to be shipped out - they were out and out Kean appologists - often to the national media, deliberately insulting us fans everytime they spouted their pro-Kean lies to the national media.
Ideally we should never boo any player in blue and white - the only people who have Rovers connections that should ever be booed at Ewood are VENKYS, especially that stupid, ignorant cow Mrs Desai (thats is she can ever be bothered to turn upo again !).

Also genuine Rovers fans are still concerned about the way the club is being run.
Fans should not dictate who is or is not appoint but it is worrying that names such as Maradona should be thrown into the ring at this late stage( or is it?)

I didnt choose to boo Kaz although i didnt agree with what he did. However, i dont think that people who did have any less right to watch than i do. Everybody needs to man up, these players are professional, D Murphy's performances show he clearly doesnt care what the fans think so why not boo him? When links to Shebby and the rest of the croneys are notoriously hard to communicate down, perhaps booing is one of the few ways fans can get their points across.
All that said, its a shame that nobody's talking about the win.

Just do whatever you want, you pay for the right. You cant insist booers should shutup and they should stay at home, it isnt up to you to tell them when they are to be satisfied. Murphy was named as Club Captain and has shown no qualities of the sort, yet there has been no public apology or any communication at all to the fans for his appaulling performances. occasionally, and in the right context, booing can add to an atmosphere. i am talking about cases like robbie savage, who were booed by opposing fans in comedic fashion, as if they were the pantomime villain. in many ways, players like savage revelled in this and no-one was hurt.
for me, football is at an extremely low ebb at the moment. and much of that is down to the fact that it has lost its sense of humour.
we have sky, ratcheting up even the most inconsequential game into some kind of full scale war; we have players paid extraordinary amounts which seem out of kilter with what they bring to the world; we have allegations of racism and unacceptable behaviour between adults; and we have fans that throw objects, abuse and fists because they can't behave themselves in a respectable fashion when they don't get absolutley what they want.
we have our troubles at rovers at the moment, but for fans to blame their booing on venkys, kean's legacy or players who don't appear to be pulling their weight, is laughable. only one person is responsible for the noise that you as an individual make, and that is you.
football has it's ups and downs largely we need to be more accepting of that. that is where the enjoyment comes from. we all like winning, but given that clearly that cannot happen all the time, how about we just enjoy going to watch a sport amongst like-minded people who know how to behave.
if you feel strongly enough about a situation to boo, then i'd rather you didn't go to the game. you'd be happier, the players would be happier, i'd be happer, i'm sure others would be too. and on top of that, you'd be £30 better off. everyone's a winner!

Are you trying to encite violence in the stands? Are you trying to get the Rovers fans to fight amongst themselves become some reporter has tried to alienate 20% of the crowd from the rest? For shame.
Your statements are totally blown out of proportion:
"But I just cannot understand why people want to pay £20 or £30 a game to stand there and boo, jeer, swear and criticise their own team."
I was unaware that Danny Murphy represents the entire team? How can you take one instance of booing a DECISION to bring a player on and turn that into booing and entire team? You are essentially bear-baiting. Not to mention the fact that you have lifted this "article" directly from The Wild Blackburn Rover web-blog.
As for CKR, the man has GREEDY written all over his face. If you have watched him for more than 10 mins you would see this when he consistently shoots from 40 yards when better options are available. I would find it a disgrace if CKR ever plays for Rovers again after the penalty debacle, if you can't boo a player for ruining your teams chances through his own greed then when can you? What about racist players? What about referee's who get decisions wrong? You live in a dream world Clough, if you don't like the mentality of Football then go and watch golf or water polo.

It seems to be more important to some to vent the frustrations that we all feel than to create an better atmosphere for the team to play in.
He's not saying he can't understand why people boo.
He's not saying there's no reason to complain about life at Rovers right now.
He's not saying fans don't have the right to voice their opinion (I mean, get a grip, have these people forgotten how strongly DC defended the fans' reaction to SK, Venkys and co against the rest of the media mere months ago??)
He's saying that booing - a month after SK has left - will only make the team, or specific individuals, play worse. HOW IS THAT DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND?
It gets past the point of being logical and actually starts lending credence to the outsiders when they come out with things like 'maybe if you spent less time booing your own team and getting behind them...etc'
We ALL feel f**cked off with the way things have been handled over the last 2 years.
We ALL feel like the people in charge have turned the badge into a laughing stock.
Why then contribute to the same negativity we were all tarnished with only 6 months ago?
I'm not too proud to admit that I was as hard on Keith Andrews as the rest of them. Now he's still playing in the Prem, playing better than he ever did, while we're in the Championship...I can't believe I never thought for a second 'maybe he plays badly because the fans tell him he's sh*t'..
What makes a player / team dig that bit deeper and raise their game when its needed ? Is it -
a) being booed whenever their name is called out / the ball goes near them / they go a goal behind
OR
b) having the crowd make the right kind of noise, singing right from the first to the last minute and shouting 'come on' at players rather than 'get off' / 'your useless' etc.

ers come and go. We have a right to let Orr, murphy et al know they are not wanted here. Is ANYONE saying they are happy to see Orr and Murphy in a Rovers shirt?

Clough ,if you cant understand why people pay 20 -30 quid and boo ,your in the wrong department , Let me educate your ignorance , people will pay for tickets even if we went down to the pit of the divisions , its called love heart n soul for the club you love . All clubs boo when you see players not giving all they got game after game . Andrews is playing very well at the moment ,,pity he did,nt show the same kind of commitment when with us , Most fans have to work long hours to be able to fund home n away matches and are entitled to voice opinions to people who are not giving their all .Fans are sick and fed up of the c--p were being fed day after day by peoples not educated in football matters . COMPLAIN about the booing ? you should be HEAPING praise on the 13,000 that turn up dispite ALL the c-p that they have had to endure .
IF PLAYERS ,OFFICIALS OR OWNERS ARE BEING BOOED , ITS THEIR FAULT NOT OURS .
would you pay 20 - 30 quid to be slapped across the face clough , well most of the fans have for many months .
It's not. It's self defeating. And most of the time you are actually wrong. Those players who you boo can never ever do good in your eyes; you boo them regardless just thinking you are right.
People are sick and tired of you not understanding that you are having a detrimental effect on the team.
I can't be arsed going into the details but your opinion of Andrews and your justification that it was all right to boo him says it all. No other club was booing one of their regular international players then. Andrews was booed constantly by our inbred minority.
What were sick and tired about then philmoulden? John Williams was in charge and we were in the Prem. I'm guessing booing and moaning is just your thing.
Suffice to say you are a moron and the vast majority of Rovers fans don't want you at the game.

This article is a disgrace Dan, I think you should resign from the LET for this torrent of abuse aimed at what is probably 20% of the fans who pay to turn up on match days.
If you are too stupid to understand why booing is a bad thing, then clearly you need pity. Nowt else.
Dan Clough is not bear baiting, he's speaking for the vast majority of Rovers fans. You people who constantly boo don't speak for us. We want you to shut up. You are a major pain in the arse. Get used to that fact or change.

how can anyone NOT get on theback of the likes of Orr who gave that pathetic interview after relegaiton "Kean is a great manager.." these people NEED running out of the club, they are ruining OUR club, WE are the club, managers/players/own

And if they are selected I want them to perform to the best of their abilities, and so booing them would be the last thing I'd want to do.
If you could understand that, it would go a long way to you being a much happier Rovers fan in the future. The rest of us would be happier too.
Steve Kean has gone now. This shouldn't be a vendetta against all and sundry. It's childish and it serves no purpose.
I'm not saying Hendry should still be around mind, what with his crazy non Rovers shenanigans, but he's the only stand out for me.

It has been going on a long long time, they even booed Shearer on his first return to Ewood with Newcastle.
Many more fans are not going to matches because of the diabolical atmosphere, far more than have been boycotting matches. That's why attendances haven't increased significantly since Kean left.
In the old days most of the fans could play football to a reasonably high level and understood the game much better, the modern football fan does well to walk home after a game.
Dan Clough is quite right, wouldn't take any notice of the ignorant knobheads who post on this site.

At the Wolves game it was the away supporters that were booing Murphy. I was in the middle of the stand near the top behind the net and the booing was coming from my left.
He's useless. Waste of money.
