LEAM Richardson admitted he enjoyed his first taste of management at the Crown Ground despite the late drama.
The final whistle was met with relief as Accrington Stanley’s caretaker boss saw his side almost surrender a 4-1 half-time lead against Gillingham.
A 4-3 win pushed the Reds into the play-off positions on Saturday evening – although they dropped back to eighth following Oxford’s draw at Burton Albion yesterday.
But victory helped Stanley move on from the shock of losing long-serving manager John Coleman to Rochdale last Monday.
Although there has been plenty of interest in the job, with David Unsworth, Paul Cook and Ronnie Moore among the names linked with the post, Richardson could be in line to replace the 49-year-old full-time.
And he was pleased to get off to a winning start.
“They've worked hard all week so they deserve that win, it doesn't matter what's gone on behind the scenes,” he said.
“They've shown their professionalism and worked hard all week and did exactly what they've been asked for.
“We carried the momentum on, as they have in the last few months, and you could see as the first half went on they played with a lot of freedom and caused them a lot of problems.”
Asked about the possibility of being named Coleman's successor, Richardson said: “I'm just doing it for the lads and everything at the minute.
“We're just trying to work hard and tried to have a good week and work towards Saturday and get a result, and we have done.
“We'll take it one week at a time.”
