WELL, Sven and Sol have left Notts County, but Lady Luck certainly hasn’t deserted them.
Stanley scored first and we all went crazy, but the referee then (after giving the goal) went over to his linesman and disallowed it!
The bad luck for Stanley did not stop there. A penalty save from Ian Dunbavin was not cleared by the defence and the first County goal was notched on the scoresheet.
County took their chances well and deserved victory, but I cannot help thinking what might have been if that first goal had been allowed to stand.
I had the pleasure of ‘enjoying’ the match from the comfort of the Buy-The-House Lounge as one of the match sponsors.
Watching a game from behind glass is a strange experience and, despite it being the 15th year in succession that the seven of us who made the trip to Barbados to follow the Reds in 1995 have sponsored a match, it still felt odd.
But, while there is nothing to compare to standing with the lads on the Clayton End, the hospitality now on offer at the Crown Ground is superb – another measure of how far we have come as club in the Football League.
Tonight we take on Macclesfield in what I am sure will be an emotional night.
The untimely passing of their manager Keith Alexander has sent shockwaves through the world of football.
I hope it has made people involved in the running of football in this country stop and take stock of what is really important.
In a world where cash is king and multi-millionaire players play for clubs with a mountain of debt, it can be all too easy to forget the real people who make football happen in the true spirit of the game.
