ACCRINGTON Stanley suffered FA Cup dejection as they were dumped out of the competition by non-league Guiseley, who had played over 75 minutes with 10 men at the Wham Stadium.

The Reds looked set to progress when Sean McConville headed them in front early in the second half after Chris M’Boungou had been dismissed just before the break.

John Rooney equalised from the spot late on but the Lions’ hero was goalkeeper Jonny Maxted, who produced a performance that should go down in FA Cup folklore. He made a string of sensational saves over the 120 minutes before saving penalties from Billy Kee and Scott Brown.

Although Aaron Chapman kept out Callum McFadzean’s spot kick Mike Fondon was able to send the National League side through on one of the greatest nights in their history.

Stanley were denied by the woodwork multiple times in the first half, first with Mark Hughes heading McConville’s free-kick against the outside of the post, before Kayden Jackson was the next to be thwarted.

Maxted became a busy man and he came up with a sensational one-handed save to keep Hughes’ free header out from McConville’s cross.

Guiseley’s task was made harder when M’Boungou was dismissed on the stroke of half-time for two bookings in quick succession, although the second was harsh with Mekhi McLeod slipping as he went past the defender.

From the resulting free-kick Billy Kee planted a header against the bar as Stanley again came close before the break.

The deadlock was finally prised open inside the first couple of minutes of the second half, with McConville heading into the far corner from Callum Johnson’s cross.

The Lions responded well though and they should have levelled when Mike Fondop was presented with an open goal after confusion between Chapman and Jordan Thorniley, but he somehow lashed a half-volley over goal and stand from inside the six-yard box.

Stanley hadn’t done enough to press home their numerical advantage and they were punished for it with just over 10 minutes to go. Rooney made no mistake from 12 yards after an infringement. It was not the only time that Stanley paid the penalty.

Stanley: Aaron Chapman, Janoi Donacien, Mark Hughes, Ben Richards-Everton, Jordan Thorniley, Erico Sousa (Mekhi McLeod 10 (Mallik Wilks 91)), Liam Nolan, Callum Johnson (Scott Brown 80), Sean McConville, Kayden Jackson, Billy Kee

Aaron Chapman had been key in earning Stanley this second chance with a fine performance in Yorkshire just over a week ago and he was called into action again inside the first minute.

Former Stanley favourite Lee Molyneux won the corner and from his delivery Jean-Yves Niate volleyed goalwards, only for Chapman to produce a brilliant one-handed save.

Within three minutes Stanley went close themselves,

The National League side certainly weren’t overawed by the occasion, with Chapman making another fine save, diving low to his left to keep out Jake Lawlor’s shot from 12 yards.

Stanley turned up the tempo as the half wore on, and were again denied by the woodwork - Jackson this time.

. Kayden Jackson played McConville in and he rounded the advancing Jonny Maxted, only to allow Connor Brown to block his shot. From the resulting corner Jackson rifled a shot against the inside of the post.

Kee came close to winning it for Stanley in normal time, but he was unable to force the ball over the line from a corner, and the top scorer then headed Scott Brown’s cross straight at Maxted early in extra-time.

Maxted produced more heroics on the stroke of the turnaround, pushing away McConville’s fierce volley, before denying Mallik Wilks with his feet as the clock ticked down.

Whatever Stanley could throw at the Lions goal was being matched by Maxted, who produced a one-handed wonder save to deny McConville from six yards before flying to his left to push away Kee’s long ranger and force a shootout.
