ACCRINGTON Stanley boss John Coleman aired his frustrations after last night’s home clash with Cambridge United was called off due to a waterlogged pitch – but insisted the officials made the right call.

The Reds were looking for their third home league win in a row as they prepared to take on the U’s.

But despite the best efforts of the Wham Stadium groundstaff to make conditions playable after a day of heavy rain in East Lancashire, referee John Busby made the decision shortly before 6pm.

A new date for the game has yet to be announced, but Coleman says the postponement means his side face a tougher run-in as they attempt to pull clear of the League Two relegation zone.

“It’s very frustrating because we had a good win on Saturday and you want to be going in to the game on the crest of a wave,” he said.

“The players prepared well for the game so it’s a bit of come down for them.

“There’s no arguments from me about the game being called off – the pitch isn’t fit enough, there’s too much standing water.

“I’ve been quick to be critical of the fact that games were being played when they shouldn’t have been played, so you won’t get any arguments from me.

“It’s another game that we’re going to have to slot in and it makes the run-in even more demanding.”

He added: “It’s all about getting the results and there was no guarantee that we’d have won the game.

“You want to play it and play it while you feel you’re in form.

“We would have done more work on Monday and Tuesday if we knew that we weren’t playing and so it sort of knocks you sideways.

“We will need to adjust what we were doing – we have to be careful we don’t end up doing too much before Saturday to compensate. It’s frustrating, but we have to get on with it.”

Stanley face a tough trip to league leaders Doncaster Rovers at the weekend, before back-to-back home games against play-off chasers Wycombe and Barnet.

“We have got to hope we can carry the momentum in to the next game,” said Coleman. “We’ll try and prepare as best we can.

“We have to remind the players of how we won and the battling performance we put in to get that result (last time out).

“You don’t know what the English weather is going to be like day to day, never mind week to week.

“We just have to train hard and prepare right and if the game takes place next week then fine.”
