ACCRINGTON Stanley boss John Coleman believes his squad are developing a ruthless mentality which he claims can see them thrive this season.

The Reds chief revealed that last weekend’s 0-0 draw at Crawley felt like a defeat to his players after they missed a host of chances to win the game.

Accrington have tasted defeat just four times in their 14 League Two matches so far this season but three of those have come against sides currently in the bottom seven.

Coleman wants to improve his side’s results against struggling sides, starting with tomorrow’s visit of bottom of the table Newport County where he hopes to banish the poor form against those at the bottom.

He said: “We were very unlucky not to win at Crawley.

“One of the pleasing things was the attitude of the players after the game, it felt like a defeat, it hurt them.

“I think if you have that mindset then you want to go and do something about it.

“Results have got to hurt you and it has got to mean something. I think we are seeing that in our players now and I think that is a key to any team that is going to be successful.”

Coleman is also viewing tomorrow’s clash as a chance for the Reds to build up some momentum in front of their own fans.

Although unbeaten since August at the Wham Stadium, a run of four games, the Reds boss believes there is plenty more to come.

“I don’t know what it is but we still haven’t properly played as well as we can do at home,” he added.

“I think our form at home is an area for improvement.

“We have spoken to the players about motivating themselves for these games and seeing the bigger picture which is the prize of three points.

“Every game, the three points on offer make it a massive game no matter who you take the points off. We should be as determined to win whether we are playing a Portsmouth or a Barnet or a Newport.

“We want the players to have the mindset that every game is important.”
