MOST Accrington Stanley supporters might not have known too much about Tariqe Fosu before arriving at the game with Cambridge United but the on-loan Reading man must have left a lasting impression with many of them by the end.

The winger came off the bench to score his first goal for the Reds against the U’s, secure a point for John Coleman’s team and maintain their record of scoring in every home game this season.

With his team 1-0 down and only 14 minutes left the youngster was calmness personified to slide the ball home and keep Stanley in touch with the automatic promotion places in League Two.

Fosu began the afternoon among the subs with Coleman electing to name an unchanged starting 11.

The home team had been expecting a cagey affair after Cambridge had stopped Oxford getting a single shot on target in their previous game and so it turned out.

After a quiet opening 15 minutes the Reds began to find their feet with a drilled Brad Halliday cross scrambled out by a defender before visiting goalkeeper Will Norris had to save well from Scott Brown.

Billy Kee is a man in red-hot form but he was unable to celebrate his new contract with another goal, instead heading Piero Mingoia’s excellent cross straight at Norris and getting a bang to the head for his troubles after 27 minutes.

Cambridge posed little early attacking threat but did start to create openings, with captain Luke Berry twice thwarted by good defending from Halliday as half time approached.

After the interval it was Shaun Derry’s visitors who looked most assured and after Ryan Ledson had seen a deflected shot test Ross Etheridge they took the lead in somewhat strange circumstances.

Striker Jimmy Spencer found himself in behind the Stanley backline with Etheridge to beat only for Tom Davies to get across and seemingly get a telling touch to the ball. That touch only served to cannon the ball into Spencer and beyond the goalkeeper into the corner of the net.

Stanley had just over half an hour to find a leveller but it took a double substitution to liven then up with Fosu and Shay McCartan introduced for Mingoia and Sean McConville.

Soon they were making chances again with Norris again at his best to push out a Matty Pearson header and McCartan’s follow up blocked by a defender.

Fosu wasn’t to be denied though and when Brown played him in down the right channel the recent signing accelerated into the area and slid a deft finish beyond Norris into the far corner for only his second senior goal.

Now Stanley had the momentum and tried to force home their advantage, with Brown providing the biggest alarm for the U’s defence. The midfielder cut in from the left and was allowed to much space to get a right foot shot away that flew a foot wide of the near post.

There was to be no winner with Coleman having to settle for a point as his team went six games unbeaten and level on points with third-placed Bristol Rovers and Plymouth Argyle in fourth.
