ACCRINGTON Stanley saw the weather intervene for the second home match running as their League Two clash with Wycombe Wanderers was called off 90 minutes before kick off on Saturday.

Heavy rain in East Lancashire meant the match had been in doubt all week and the wet weather left referee Paul Tierney with little choice but to call the game off.

Tierney arrived at the Wham Stadium at 11am and an inspection deemed the pitch playable.

But, with heavy rain falling, a second pitch inspection was called for 1.30pm and, with conditions having worsened, Tierney called the game off.

It means Stanley haven’t played a home fixture since November 14, when they drew 2-2 with Newport in torrential rain which led to Reds boss John Coleman querying whether that game should have been allowed to finish.

Stanley’s home match with Hartlepool earlier this month was called off an hour before kick off and has since been rearranged for Tuesday, January 19, while a new date for the Wycombe clash will now also have to be found.

Wanderers were already in East Lancashire when the game was called off, leaving a wasted journey for many of their fans.

And the Chairboys boss, Blackburn born Gareth Ainsworth, said of the postponement: “I’m not going to go against the referee’s decision. I wanted the game on because we can battle in these conditions.

“I’m gutted but nature has had its say. I can’t argue with the decision and we will now have a tough trip up here on a Tuesday night.”

Stanley’s next home game is the Boxing Day clash with Carlisle United, who have been forced to move two of their fixtures to Preston North End’s Deepdale and Blackburn Rovers’ Ewood Park such was the extent of flooding in Cumbria.

The Reds are on the road at Stevenage on Saturday looking to stretch their unbeaten league run to seven games and notch a third consecutive league victory.

Weekend results leave the Reds in fifth place, four points off the automatic promotion places with two games in hand on the four sides above them.
