PIERO Mingoia is hoping to strike it lucky, with the help of Terry Gornell.

The pair were both on the scoresheet as Accrington Stanley mounted their recovery from a run of five straight defeats with back-to-back wins recorded on Valentine’s Day at Southend.

Gornell had scored the winner the Tuesday before as the Reds came out of their slump with a late win at home to Oxford.

Mingoia says he has felt an instant on-field chemistry with returning striker Gornell that he hopes will reap rewards as Stanley entertain struggling Cheltenham Town - Gornell’s former club - tonight.

And while the emphasis is on teamwork, Mingoia has set a personal target to keep adding to his goal tally after joining the ranks as joint top scorer alongside James Gray and Shay McCartan.

And he sees Gornell as an ally.

“We seem to have got a little bit of a connection in the first couple of games. We seem to be on the same wavelength,” said Mingoia.

“Our styles kind of suit each other and it’s worked in the last two games.”

Mingoia’s goal in a 2-1 win over Phil Brown’s Shrimpers was his fifth of the season.

He says the prospect of reaching double figures would be “very, very nice”, but he is reluctant to set himself a target.

“Whenever I play I just want to keep adding a little bit more,” he said. “I’m a bit more aggressive on the ball, and shooting. I’ve realised the more I shoot they keep going in, so I might as well keep shooting. I want as many as possible.”

Ultimately, results are the priority for Stanley and Mingoia says the Reds can use fresh memories of a poor run of form to keep them on the right track now.

“It can go one of two ways, some people might want to forget about it and pretend it never happened or some people might keep it in the back of their head and not want to experience that feeling again of losing a few in a row,” he said.

“The last two games have been really pleasing so you don’t want to undo it all against Cheltenham.”
