EXPERIENCED defender Nicky Hunt says there is nothing wrong with Accrington Stanley’s team spirit, despite much not going right on the pitch this year.

The Reds have recorded just one win in 2015, and go into tonight’s home game with Oxford United having lost five games on the spin.

They have slipped from the cusp of the play-off positions to 19th in the table, just five points above the drop zone, albeit with a game in hand.

But Hunt insists the players are united in their quest to stop the slide.

“As soon as your spirit goes down and it’s all doom and gloom in the training ground you’re fighting a losing battle. But that’s one thing that’s can never be said about us. That spirit has always been there and we’ll keep on fighting,” said the former Bolton man.

“We started off the season not so well, and the previous season we didn’t either, but I don’t think the spirit has ever been questioned.

“Whichever group of players there has been at this football club the spirit has had to be kept because there’s only us that can get us out it, there’s only us that can do anything about it.”

Hunt has seen signs of recovery since the 5-1 humbling at home to Northampton Town last month.

“We feel we have grown a lot stronger since that game. But it’s down to us now. It’s down to the team that the manager picks, it’s down to the squad of 18 players with whoever’s on the bench as well, and the people who aren’t getting in the squad are almost as key as the ones who aren’t playing,” said Hunt.

“It’s just about getting three points in whatever way we can.

“We don’t need to play pretty football, we just need to dig in, give 125 per cent and get the result we all know we deserve. We’ve got a very good squad and I don’t think we should be in the position we are in the league.”

Hunt hopes tonight can be a turning point in their season.

“It’s a massive game for us,” said the 31-year-old. “No-one’s under any illusions about what a win can get us – it can move us up two, three or four places.

“We can’t let thoughts of a defeat into our minds because if we do we’ll be fighting a losing battle.

“I don’t know what it is that we’re missing at the moment. because I think We have a lot of good things in this squad, especially with the players we’ve got.

“We’ve got such a young squad but we have got old heads as well, people who have been around and played the game and know what tonight’s all about.”
