NEW Accrington Stanley goalkeeper Scott Davies could be the club’s eighth stopper of the season if he makes his debut in Saturday’s League Two trip to Plymouth Argyle.

The 27-year-old has been backed to be a success at the Store First Stadium by his new boss John Coleman having joined on loan from League One neighbours Fleetwood Town on loan until the end of the season.

And the former Morecambe goalkeeper could go straight into the team for the long weekend trip down south.

Coleman said of his third signing of the day, having also brought in striker Terry Gornell following his release by Cheltenham and winger Gerardo Bruna: “Scott is an excellent keeper with League Two experience.

“We are delighted to have him until the end of the season.”

Stanley have already used seven goalkeepers in their 33 games across all competitions with Matt Macey the latest new boy after he joined earlier this month on loan from Arsenal.

He endured a difficult afternoon in the 5-1 home defeat to Northampton last weekend and could lose his place to Davies on Saturday.

The Reds also have Andrew Dawber on their books but the only competitive action he has seen this season has been on loan with Clitheroe in the Evo-Stik League Division One North.

Stanley began the season with Luke Simpson in goal and he went on to make nine appearances for the club but lost his place after being sent off in a 4-0 defeat at Shrewsbury.

His replacement in that game was Jay Lynch who had joined the club following his release by Bolton and the 21-year-old played in the next game at Luton before Joe Lumley displaced him following his arrival on loan from QPR.

Lumley played six consecutive games before returning to Harry Redknapp’s side shortly after Coleman took over as boss.

He was replaced by Chesterfield loanee Aaron Chapman who impressed in his two starts before picking up an injury in the defeat to Dagenham & Redbridge in October and returning to the Spireites.

Finnish ace Jesse Joronen was next through the Store First Stadium’s revolving door before he too returned to his parent club injured after being forced off in the derby win over Morecambe, just his fourth appearance for the Reds.

On both occasions Simpson, came off the bench but Coleman drafted in goalkeeper number six for the FA Cup tie with Notts County with Jack Rose joining from West Brom.

The 20-year-old kept a clean sheet on his debut and went onto make eight appearances before being recalled by the Baggies.

Simpson found himself back in the starting XI for the New Year’s Day victory over Exeter but was replaced by Arsenal’s Macey for the defeat to Tranmere last month after the former Oldham keeper’s short-term contract expired.

And Macey could now find himself replaced by Davies, whose only football so far this season has been a loan spell at Morecambe where he played against Stanley in October.

Macey’s loan deal expires after Saturday’s trip to Plymouth.
