It will be the former Tranmere Rovers man’s third spell with the Reds having joined for the first time on loan in 2008 before spending the 2010-11 season at the club on a permanent basis as Stanley reached the League Two play-offs.

And Gornell, who won promotion to League One while at Shrewsbury Town, wants to help Stanley climb up the League Two table.

He said: “The last time I was there I left with good memories although I thought that we were good enough to get promoted. We had a great season and hopefully we can bring those days back now.”

The 25-year-old also said the opportunity to play for Coleman had been a major factor in his decision to return to East Lancashire.

“As soon as I heard from the manager I wanted to get back up there and get it done,” he added. “I can’t wait to get back to Accrington and get started now.”

Stanley boss Coleman said he was delighted to add Gornell to his struggling striking department.

“This was too good an opportunity to turn down,” said the Reds chief. “We needed that type of player, just for his work rate alone and his ability to hold up the play. I think he’ll be invaluable to us. Terry probably played his best football under us so we hope we can rekindle that.”

And the manager is confident that Stanley supporters will see an improved Gornell after spending three-and-a-half years away from the club with Shrewsbury, Rochdale and Cheltenham.

“I think he’ll be a better player this time around. When we had that great run that led to the play-offs Terry was instrumental and we think he can get back to that. He’s a little older and more experienced and I’m looking forward to working with him again.

“He knows us and a lot of the players and we don’t expect he’ll have much settling in to do. It’s a great move for both parties.”

Gornell spent two months on loan with the Reds in 2008, scoring four times in 11 games.

He returned to Stanley for the 2010/11 season on a free transfer after leaving Prenton Park and was a key part of the team, scoring 13 goals in 44 games as John Coleman’s men were beaten in the League Two play-off semi-final by Stevenage.

Gornell could make his third Stanley debut in Saturday’s trip to Plymouth.
