Job is almost done, says Accrington Stanley boss Beattie

WITH Accrington Stanley just one point away from securing Football League safety, James Beattie admits the ‘job is almost done’.

But there is no chance the Reds boss will be resting on his laurels going into the final two games of the campaign.

Stanley missed the chance to seal their survival on Monday when they went down 1-0 at play-off bound Southend United.

The defeat left the Reds four points off the bottom two.

But a draw from either their trip to play-off hopefuls Oxford United on Saturday or their final game of the season at home to mid-table AFC Wimbledon on Saturday, May 3 will be enough to beat the drop.

That is because two of the teams below them in the League Two standings, Wycombe Wanderers and Bristol Rovers, go head-to-head on Saturday at Adams Park.

And should there be a winner in that match, Stanley would be safe from relegation even if they lost to Oxford and Wimbledon.

Beattie, whose side were rock-bottom in October after 12 winless games, said: “I think the job is almost done although we won’t take anything for granted and we will be working hard as we want to get the results the boys deserve in the final two games.

“I think we have been in every game this season, except Newport on the opening day, whether we have won, lost or drawn.

“That’s credit to the boys and their rise especially after four points in the opening 12 games.”
