Accrington Stanley's clash with Portsmouth called off

ACCRINGTON Stanley's League Two match at Portsmouth has been postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.

The game was due to take place at Fratton Park tomorrow but heavy rain on the south coast prompted Pompey to call in a local referee to inspect the playing surface this afternoon.

It is a shame but it will give valuable time for injured players to get fit.

The national newspapers reported that Mr Beattie gave tickets for the nearby Southampton match to four Stanley fans who turned up in Portsmouth. Nice gesture.

Nice gesture yes, but the game was called off over a day before - idiots rewarded with a seven goal thriller - let's hope Beattie and his team give those of us with half a brain something to cheer on Saturday.

I'm not having that, GazMataz. Call yourself a Stanley fan? The only idiotic thing about the whole situation is your post! Criticizing loyal fans who make the effort to support the club home and away, nice one. The pitch inspection wasn't even announced till we we over half way there and by the time it was called off we were less than 50 miles away. I work bloody hard and am fully entitled to book a day off work and make a weekend of a stanley away game with my mates if i want to- personally see nothing idiotic about that, the game being called off is just one of those things.

Fair play to Beattie, we'd decided to stop over anyway and make the most of the weekend and what started as a joke on the Friday night turned into a great gesture from a genuine football bloke.

Oh and about the half a brain comment, well what can i say, a graduate with a job-not bad for an idiot eh!

I don't, as a rule reply to comments. I say my piece and leave it at that, after all this is comments section rather than a discussion board. However I will not be party to this vile slander against my commitment to our proud club.
I have been posting with regards to Stanley for quite a while now I have to say this online alias who has taken it upon himself to spout ridiculous accusations is a new one to me.
I cannot be certain of the events that led to this post but I can make a pretty astute guess. Person or person know to our poster informed him of my opinions and burning with an outrageously obscene sense of self-worth and misplaced indignation rushed straight to a keyboard to pontificate absolute twaddle.
Let's start from the beginning, yes, I do call myself a Stanley fan, I'm not about to start playing 'more-Stanley-than-t
hou' but let me explain a few things son.
Stanley is in my blood, my relatives both played for and managed the club back before we went out of business, so to call me not a fan is not only an insult to me but also an insult to the dead who worked tirelessly for the club you claim to support. At this point I would normally stop and await the inevitable apology but judging from the language, grammar, tone and arrogance of the post I doubt this will be forthcoming so I am forced to continue.
Yes, games do get called off, you aren't the only one who's travelled far only for the game to be abandoned, the difference is most people treat this as an inevitable inconvenience of being a football fan. It's just one of those things. Most people accept this, and as followers of football look for a game close by that is on. I for one have fond memories of Blackpool, Sheffield Wednesday and Oldham fans brightening up our crowd in recent seasons. What they do not do is beg (in all but name) tickets for another game from their club's manager.
Let's get this straight from the off, Beattie is already famed for his generosity (paying tax bills, getting the squad suits) and you knew full well that by following the course of action you did that you would more than likely get something in return – don't bother to deny it – you will only prove yourself a liar on top of an imbecile. It was a 'great gesture' and he is a 'genuine football bloke' and you took advantage of this for your own ends. Mentioning him does not give your pathetic argument any greater credence.
Now let's get back to your post. You make a big point of being a graduate; however either intentionally or subconsciously you seem to be suggesting this makes you better than the average Stanley fan and certainly more intelligent than me. Thing is son, I don't need to brag about my qualifications or the fact I work 'bloody hard' in some misguided belief this lends weight to my arguments. Do you know what? I'm a graduate too and as your alias has '91' in it (more than likely this was your year of birth) then I've had my degree and been working 'bloody hard' a good decade longer than you son.
Which brings us rather nicely to the crux of the matter, you seem to be labouring under the impression that you are some sort of marvel for travelling home and away, well, I was doing that before you had developed basic motor skills and the ability to wipe your own backside, although from your post I'm not sure if this might still not be the case. It's because of people like me and mine and the effort and dedication we've shown that you even have a league team to watch, so shut up and show some respect.
Coming from the area we do, given its economic and socially political background you are very lucky to have the opportunity to further your education, although you come across as one of those people who abuses this opportunity and treats higher education as a some sort of three year eighteen to thirty holiday. Similarly you are lucky to be in employment given the current climate; neither of these things gives extra validity to your ill thought comments.
Strange as it may seem to you I am able to be a dedicated supporter and think you a freeloading, obnoxious little twerp with an over inflated sense of self entitlement, the two views are not mutually exclusive. At no point in my original post did I mention any negativity towards the club, in fact I praised our manager so instead of getting so aggravated in future actually read what has been written then perhaps (doubtful) you won't come across so ignorant.
If you had bothered to do your research (an absolute necessity for a graduate) you would see from my comments that I have never been more behind the club and am profoundly happy we are starting to become a real league team off the pitch as well as on it. As you seem to think yourself such a staunch supporter, then I eagerly await your insightful and well presented views on my town's great club in the near future.

Nor do I GazMataz, infact until your first post I was merely a casual reader of the Lancashire Telegraph comments section but having heard that I had been publicly and rather unfairly branded an idiot with a strong implication that I do not possess half a brain cell (both comments made by yourself), I felt the need to register an account and submit a reply. You write a very well-written post but you have taken my response way out of context and seemingly have mistaken my honesty for arrogance.

At no point have I claimed to be better than any other Stanley fan or Accringtonian (or anybody else for that matter including yourself); that might be your interpretation but it was not my intention. Both of my posts are directed at you solely and your comments, and I'm just talking about the facts here rather than speculating about dates of birth etc. I questioned your commitment to the club not knowing you as a person or your background (foolishly it would seem) on the basis that you were branding the four travelling supporters as idiots-not the club or manager. Such degradation is not something that I would expect from a genuine Stanley fan given my personal experiences; hence, I questioned you as a supporter. I have the upmost respect for those who have contributed to getting Stanley where they are today so I'm sorry if I have caused offence-that was not my intention.

I don't apologize however for mentioning having a degree or a job. I did this not to brag or demean others, it was purely to respond to your comment about me being an idiot and suggesting that I do not possess half a brain. I wanted to make it clear that on the contrary I am not a freeloader and have some degree of intelligence (pardon the pun)! Yes I've been fortunate to have some fantastic support of which I'm grateful but I have worked hard to get through full time education and secure a job in this tough economic climate. I contribute to this society, I pay my taxes etc-I'm anything but a feeloading, obnoxious little twerp as you put it. Some people may well see university as a three year party and then go on an all expenses gap year paid for by mummy and daddy but that is not me and so I don't accept your offensive 'begging' comments about the Southampton game. I choose to support Stanley as much as I can-it is my passion and something I'm proud of, I don't seek any sort of recognition by doing it, I'm just supporting my home town team and I am fully aware of the consequences that inevitability some matches will be postponed!

What started as a joke on twitter asking for hospitality tickets with no expectation whatsoever resulted in Mr Beattie very kindly sorting us some tickets (and for the record there was more than one travelling group that did actually get tickets for the game). We had already arranged to meet some Burnley fans anyway and pay onto the match before the twitter conversation-we never seriously believed there would be a response and even suspected Beattie might be winding us up until we got to reception and found the tickets waiting! I'd advise you to look online at the full twitter conversation if you haven't already and you can see for yourself but if that's your opinion then fair enough.

I now fully recognize your support for the club and manager but whatever else you may think/say I'm personally looking forward to the rest of the season and thanking Mr Beattie in person tomorrow. I suppose we'll have to agree to disagree on the rest!
