BURNLEY defender David Edgar has billed tomorrow’s clash with Honduras as the biggest game of his international career after scoring a stunning volley in Canada’s win over Cuba.
Edgar netted right footed from the edge of the box to round off Canada’s 3-0 triumph in Toronto on Friday night, with the result meaning they now need only a draw in Honduras tomorrow to reach the final stage of World Cup qualifying in the CONCACAF region.
Canada are in Group C with Panama, Honduras and Cuba and must finish in the top two to go into the final phase of six teams.
In the final phase, three countries will qualifying automatically for the World Cup, with a fourth going into a play-off against the winners of the Oceana section, expected to be New Zealand.
Four years ago Canada failed to make it through to the last stage of qualifying but travel to San Pedro Sula for the last match of Group C with a real chance of progress.
They currently sit second in the group to Panama, who defeated them last month, but two points above Honduras.
Edgar said: “It’s probably going to be the biggest game of my career so far, especially internationally, so I’m really looking forward to it.
“We’ve got to keep our cool and handle the pressure a bit better than we did against Panama and just play our game. This is make or break now, this is it.”
Edgar, who will then return to Burnley for their home fixture against Blackpool on Saturday, was happy to net his first senior international goal against unfancied Cuba.
“I was just in the right place at the right time and made some good contact on the ball and I was happy with that third goal,” he said, after strikes from Tosaint Rickets and Will Johnson had put Canada in command.
“The last time I scored a goal like that was against Brazil for the under 20s in Edmonton.
“I was happy with my performance against Cuba.
“There wasn’t too much defending to do but I got forward quite a bit and helped to create a couple of opportunities and scored, so I was happy with that.”
Edgar’s Burnley team-mate Sam Vokes is preparing for Wales’ qualifier in Croatia tomorrow after being an unused substitute against Scotland on Friday night.
Daniel Lafferty is also currently on international duty with Northern Ireland as they prepare for their World Cup qualifier in Portugal tomorrow.
