UPDATE: Howe set for Burnley exit

Eddie Howe Eddie Howe

BURNLEY were last night playing hardball over a compensation package for wantaway manager Eddie Howe, after refusing Bournemouth permission to speak to the 34-year-old.

The Cherries confirmed their interest in a reunion with their former boss by making an official approach to the Clarets, with Howe understood to be keen on a return to the south coast club.

But Burnley are not prepared to allow Howe to leave for the League One club without a fight.

Chief executive Lee Hoos said in a statement: “Bournemouth have made an unsolicited and unwanted approach for manager Eddie Howe.

“Burnley Football Club would like to stress that no agreement has been reached and Eddie Howe is still Burnley manager.

“No permission has been granted for Bournemouth to speak to Eddie.”

Howe took first team training yesterday while negotiations took place between the two clubs. It is understood that could also bethe case today as a result of last night’s stand-off.

Compensation is believed to be the major sticking point in a deal being struck.

The clubs are thought to be haggling over money that Burnley still owe Bournemouth for Danny Ings. I understand that figure is £500,000, with the Clarets paying the £1million fee for the striker in four annual instalments – the length of his contract.

Cherries chairman Eddie Mitchell told sources on the south coast that he felt the clubs were “close” to reaching an agreement with Burnley and was hopeful of a deal being concluded ahead of their League One clash at home to Leyton Orient tomorrow.

But Burnley were last night holding firm, with talks set to enter a fourth day. It is understood Howe indicated his intentions to return to the club he had previously played for, and managed for just over two years, in discussions with the Burnley board on Tuesday.

There was confusion among the squad after yesterday’s training session, with top scorer Charlie Austin – Howe’s first signing – saying: “He took training this morning (Thursday) and obviously we’ve heard the same stories as everybody else, we’re just waiting to see what happens.

“I hope he stays but we have to respect his decision.

“Nothing’s been said, we were training as normal, just going about our business.

“The manager has shown great faith in me, he spent the money to bring me from Swindon to Burnley and it would be sad if he did leave.”

It is understood Howe wished some members of staff behind the scenes at Gawthorpe well yesterday before he left the training ground around 5pm.

Whatever the outcome for BFC, EH is now 'soiled goods.'

If he wants to go, let him go. We took a chance on him and whilst he has done ok, he hasn't had the dynamic impact that people hoped he would have. Perhaps the chance of Championship management came a bit too soon for him. He hasn't failed but he hasn't really succeded either.

That's a fair assessment. I'm sure he'd have had more success if some of the players the board sold for him had stayed, but just as at AFCB, his teams score plenty but concede too regularly as well, and at Championship level, you soon get rumbled.
Eddie Howe will be a very good manager in years to come, but if his family is unhappy, and this was clearly the case as they've already returned to Dorset, then he was fighting a losing battle and unable to put all his efforts into the job.
No doubt we'll meet you in the cup in due course, and you can give Mr Howe a nice friendly "welcome back", although I doubt it would be as vociferous as that given to OC!

Midas,

Sadly, your last sentence sums up what has become the 'Burnley malaise' since leaving the Premiership.

"Neither failed nor succeeded," but erring ever closer to the former.

Mediocrity is the order of the day, since ambition to rise above it needs money and that's a commodity in short supply at BFC.

The club needs a 'Bank of Dave.'

Another temperate and sound
assessment with which I agree entirely.

You'd better be careful, you'll be giving this comments column a good name.

Any truth in Austin wanting to joing the EX-PREMIERSHIP CHAMPIONS of 95?

I think EH was such an icon at AFCB and did brilliantly that Burnley expected instant results. Could see this coming though a few weeks ago. If you remember I did a post on here saying that he is coming back for us. Wish Burnley all the best and hope your board too get the right new manager in.

"EX" being the key word my friend. Maybe you should have added "and never to be again" to your post. I'd me more concerned with what's happening down at chicken cottage now rather than clinging to the fading memories of past glories

I've heard stories about Dingles giving their sisters 'Bonleh Mayonnaise' - and it ain't Hellmann's.

We were league champions in 1960. Not sure that having "Premier League" in the title makes a difference. Liverpool have never won it either. Fair play, you did win the league but as sure as eggs are eggs, neither club will ever win it again. The point I was making was that as a clarets fan I'm realistic that we are nothing more than a mid table championship side. Cling on to those memories because you're now at the same level and you won't be returning anytime soon either
