Clarets face battle to keep Austin

BURNLEY face a battle to keep Charlie Austin in January, with Premier League clubs tracking the 15-goal top scorer.

It is understood that, surprisingly, the Clarets have yet to open talks with the striker about a new deal, despite Aston Villa and Newcastle thought to be weighing up an offer in the next transfer window.

Austin has grabbed the headlines this season, and consequently the attention of top flight and top Championship teams, as a result of his impressive goal ratio.

Around 12 Premier League managers are believed to be tracking the 23-year-old, who has scored at least once in each of his last six games to maintain his position as the country's top scorer.

Former Swindon Town marksman Austin has just 18 months left to run on his current contract. He could leave on a Bosman free transfer in 2014 if that deal is not extended.

Yet no new contract talks on the table. If that is true, it's extremely worrying what is going on in the boardroom. Despite his injuries he's clearly a top class player and allowing his contract to run down is not in the clubs best interests,

Hope the boy keeps scoring and auction him off next summer, think of it as a £6m parachute payment to keep the club afloat another season.

I think it's inevitable that we will sell charlie in January's or better yet, hold out until summer. We can't afford to turn down silly money if it's offered. All the accusations that the board have pocketed the parachute payments are nonsense. Our wage bill is too high. It doesn't take a mathematician to work out that crowds of 12000 can't support players on £5-£10k per week. I'd hate to see him go but we need the money unfortunately

Was waiting for the club to start spouting stories to up the interest for a sale in January. Shock, gasp, horror. Why don't we ask to play in league one where our ambitions deserve.
