TV PUNDIT Chris Kamara believes Eddie Howe can be the man to deliver Premier League football back to Burnley – but only if he discovers some consistency in double-quick time.

Howe arrived at Turf Moor in January 2011 with a glowing reputation having got Bournemouth promoted out of League Two on a shoestring during the previous season.

Aged 33 when he took over Howe was one of the bright young things of Football League management charged with delivering newly-relegated Burnley straight back to the Premier League.

However, despite inheriting a side in eighth place, they faded to 13th at the end of the last season and are in even worse shape this time round having taken just nine points from their opening seven games.

Kamara is cautioning against reaching for the panic button but believes without consistency the Clarets can forget all about promotion this term.

“Eddie Howe came in with a great reputation quite rightly for the work that he did at Bournemouth because he did an amazing job,” said Kamara.

“But he has quickly realised what a difficult league the Championship is and just how important it is for a manager and a team to find that consistency.

“Whether it comes at the start, the middle or the end of the season you have got to put a really good run together.

“You can’t afford to be inconsistent, winning one and then losing one and not being able to string some results together.” But, while promotion back to the Premier League is the hallowed ground for Howe, Kamara is well aware the Burnley boss could further endear himself to the Turf Moor faithful with a Capital One Cup run.

To do that the Clarets will have to come away in tact from a trip to the mercurial Paolo Di Canio and his Swindon outfit on Tuesday night.

And with the Di Canio factor, plus the fact that the Robins have already claimed the scalp of Premier League Stoke and Championship high-fliers Brighton in the competition, Kamara believes winning at the County Ground will be no mean feat.

“Paolo is always in the news and people are always talking about him,” added Kamara. “You know that you are not going to get a manager in Paolo who is going to go about things in the same way as most other managers.

“He is different to the rest and so that makes it difficult for teams playing them. If he keeps being successful in the league and getting promotions and also winning the big games like the Capital One Cup ties then he is going to get noticed so his side will be really up for taking on Burnley.”
