Burnley chief calls for loans rule review after Bellamy switch

BURNLEY chief executive Paul Fletcher has called for a review by the Football League into loan movements between Premier League and Championship clubs.

The former Clarets striker believes Craig Bellamy’s move from Manchester City has given Cardiff City an unfair advantage over other Championship sides, and he has questioned whether the debt-ridden Bluebirds can afford the Welshman’s services.

Now that top flight teams have named their 25-man squads, it is likely that a number of Premier League footballers will be made available for loan.

It is certainly an option that Burnley boss Brian Laws, who has already snapped up Jack Cork for the season from Chelsea, is hoping to further explore.

But Fletcher believes the scheme should be carefully monitored.

After a fall-out at Eastlands, Bellamy’s temporary switch to his hometown team not only raised eyebrows but also questions about who was financing the move.

It is unclear whether Cardiff, who were faced with a winding up order for an unpaid tax bill earlier this year, were making a significant contribution to the striker’s £95,000 a week pay packet.

A confidentiality clause prevents figures from being released, although it is believed Manchester City are still shelling out £75,000, with the South Wales club making up the rest.

Bellamy has already had a huge impact for second-placed Cardiff, scoring on his debut against Doncaster Rovers and contributing to a 2-0 win at Portsmouth.

Fletcher feels such subsidised moves should not be allowed, and any Premier League player who makes the step down should be paid accordingly to make the competition more of a level playing field.

“If these players join a club in the Championship, they should be paid the same as that team’s highest paid player,” he said.

“If they join a Championship club, they should be paid a Championship wage.

“Either that or the club taking the player pays his full wages. That’s the fairest way to do it.

“The league have to look at this sooner or later.”

Instead of whinging about what other clubs are doing, how about messrs Fletcher/Kilby/Laws etc devote a bit more time and the club's recently acquired riches to tie up one or two high profile loan deals of our own???

because they are making a very valid point about the introduction of "B" teams for the Premeirship elite. Nobody in the Championship would be able to pay £95k per week for Bellamy. By subsidising his wages to such an extent Man City are subsidising Cardiff. They wouldn't be able to loan cardiff £75k per week

Scouseclaret makes a fair point... Fletcher’s infantile comments smacks of jealousy brought on by his own board’s under-whelming summer activities. It’s not that long ago his own chairman had a go at restoring the “level playing field ” with his legal challenge against parachute payments . I assume that’s on the back-burner for a couple of years.
.
Fletcher should learn to have a little class and congratulate Cardiff for pulling off a magnificent coup in signing a top Premiership player.

I'm suprised the Burnley board have allowed him to talk too the press after some of the sh*te he came out with last year and the season ticket debacle which was down to him!

Boo-hoo its not fair!!! I'll tell you what isn't fair Mr Fletcher, clubs being relegated from the Premiership and being gifted £48million over 4 years for being a failure. This season Burnley will receive more money from the EPL than teams like Cardiff can only dream of receiving in total revenue all season. Bellamy's loan signing has, if anything, only evened up the playing field. If the parachute payments weren't in place other clubs would not have to flirt with administration to try and compete with the Championships rich boys.

I'm sure if bellamy had been willing to make the move down to a club like burnley fletcher would have jumped at the chance. More a case of sour grapes that once again being supposedly 'rich' and having been in the premier league for one year the club is still being over looked by players who'd prefer to join clubs of the ilk of cardiff and doncaster (remember billy sharp? Still fighting for his place at bramall lane is he?)

Then again, reconstructing a shattered team after last season's fiasco with players of the quality of sharp and others, i.e. whittingham requires spending decent money, which we all know burnley are both unwilling and unable to do.

Midas, remember back to 2003 when Burnley as a lower league side made a similar big name signing from a top Premier League side.
The player was Andy Todd and who do you think subsidised his wages for his stay at Turd Moor when you did not have a pot to p*ss in, and Todd needed match practice.

Cardiff have done nothing wrong, as pointed out, the level playing field alluded to by Fletcher is a pipe dream being bleated about by those people who are jealous of Cardiff being able to bring Bellamy home.
The recently increased parachute payments are a monstrosity but he does not berate them anymore.
If Bellamy had been born in Burnley and wanted to go there would he have turned the chance down - doubt it!
Yes Cardiff are in debt, but these are being paid off by VERY wealthy new owners, and we did not take the easy route a-la Palace (IE administration)and pay back 1.9p in the pound - everyone is going to be paid, in full,on top of that Bellamy's signing has already generated nearly £1 million in revenue for the club in added sales and tickets.
Fletcher should take a long hard look at his running of his own club and stop bleating about the unfairness of other teams good luck!

It wasn't long ago that Burnley were whinging about relegated Premier League teams getting parachute payments, saying it gave them an unfair advantage. No mention of that now is there?
Maybe he's getting his excuses in early, for when their 'promotion campaign' ends in inevitable failure.
.
Paul Fletcher...Talking out of his Arsenal, yet again.

I didn't realise that Todd was on £95k per week! and not quite in the same league of quality as Bellamy.
.
if you read what he actually says - "If these players join a club in the Championship, they should be paid the same as that team’s highest paid player" - not quite the same as most on hear are alluding.

Bellamy is being paid the same as our top earner tho, its just that Man City are topping it up with an extra £75k a week. In fact Bellamy's wages are being paid by iur rich owners personally and not even by the club so it doesnt impact on our debt.
I wonder if people would have been so quick to complain if was an English club involved. No doubt if we win promotion the moaners will be out again complaining we have deprived an Englsih club of a place in the Premiership and that we shouldnt be there at all as we're Welsh.
