Burnley star: Nobody's place is safe

GRAHAM Alexander has warned nobody’s place is guaranteed in Brian Laws’ side, as Burnley bid to mount another promotion assault.

The 38-year-old started all of the Clarets’ 61 games in their play-off winning season of 2008/09.

But with two players capable of filling every position as Burnley build for another crack at the Premier League, Alexander knows no-one will be allowed to rest on their laurels.

“There is competition throughout the squad for all positions,” said the Scotland international.

“It’s par for the course in modern football, but the manager has been trying to give everyone as much game time in pre-season to get fit, and looking at players in different positions to see where we fit into the squad.

“There are two players for each position now, at least.”

Laws gave at least 90 minutes to most of the 24-man squad that flew out to the Far East, spread across three games.

Steven Thompson and summer signing Chris Iwelumo have shared the targetman role this summer, while competition is fierce among the backline as young defenders including Richard Eckerskley and Brian Easton push for their place.

Alexander’s holding midfield role is also under threat, with former Newcastle United defender David Edgar demonstrating his capablities in that position.

“He’s done well. He’s a ball-playing defender so I could see him playing in that position when I retire in four years’ time,” smiled the Scotland international, who is still showing no signs of slowing down.

“There’s competition throughout the squad.”

And Laws is looking to add to it, with goalkeeper Lee Grant at Turf Moor today to discuss personal terms with a view to signing, after Burnley agreed a fee with Sheffield Wednesday at the fourth attempt over the weekend.

West Brom and Bristol City were said to be threatening to hijack the move, but Clarets boss Laws remained confident of being reunited with the stopper he signed from Derby County three years ago, while in charge at Hillsborough.

However, player-coach Alexander does not feel there would be cause for panic if further transfers failed to materialise.

“I know managers never stop looking to improve their squad so I don’t think the doors ever completely shut, but I think the squad looks pretty good as it is,” he said.

“I think we look quite strong. I certainly can’t see any weaknesses.

“But players can arrive in a blink of an eye and players can go.

"You’ve just got to wait and see and concentrate on yourself and make sure you’re ready.”

Alexander is more confident than I am - but let's wait and see how we start the season.

Everyone knows Burnley must make a flying start or people will be quickly on poor old Brian's back calling for him to be SACKED.

Is the headline to that piece not a total contradiction in terms?Clarets Stars? Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Oh Oh Oh Oh. Wve not had one of those since Martin Dobson in 1974, whose transfer to Everton paid for the Bob Lord Stand.
In those days at least excess cash went into the ground as opposed to certain peopl'e pockets.

"Poor old Brian", You're 'avin a 'giraffe' Howard, surely?
Look up BL in Wiki. I'll save you the bother, here are a few lines:
"BL--management role at Sheffield Wednesday, lasting 3 years in the job until he was sacked.----Burnley, bizzarely appointed Laws as their manager---He proceded to fail spectacularly and got Burnley relegated from an excellent position."
Now, with those credentials, you'd expect BL to look in the shaving mirror every morning and mutter "you lucky, lucky barst." (all the while, trousering an estimated £500,000 a year salary).
"Poor Brian"? Leave it out!

Me wonders how and what spin Mr Tetley will put on the Darwen Rovers efforts and results so far in Australia. No goals scored and so many against in such a small number of games. Perhaps the rovers will be replacing The Clarets in the Championship for 2011/12. Perhaps BFS will want to leave in less than 3 months...oops 3 years wasn't it, or was it? And thank your mother for the rabbits

Silly me, they have scored a goal.

Make judgments based on the course of a season as a whole ie 40 plus games not a handful of pre-season friendlies.
Notice you dont take issue with the star comment or the money point. Why? Because we both know its true.Maybe it is boring but that does not detract from its essential validity.Really Burnley have not had a genuine star ie top drawer Premiership or England standard since Dobbo in 1974; and he was proven to be overrated.

So what point are you trying to make? We have had no "stars" since the 60´s never mind the 70´s
.
The money point? You keep alluding to money being misappropriated by the Board but when you are asked for evidence you cannot produce anything. therefore the logical extrapolation is that you are a liar and a coward who seeks to defame members of the Board whilst hiding behind the anonimity of an internet alias.
.
Take issue with that if you dare.

Its reported fact and people can draw their own conclusions : 5,000 non -renewing season ticket holders already have. OK I accept your point there have not been any real star players at Burnley since the 60s though i think thats a bit harsh on the likes of Stevenson, Dobson, Flynn, James and Kindon et al.

Do you want to know something else about them? : they were not only fine players but real battlers proud to wear the shirt and win games against better sides on the day. The current shower of s***e have none of those qualities whatsover;-)

Have you noticed they NEVER address the points in the posts, preferring to descend into abuse- it tells you summat.

Do you just cut and paste?

You don't make anhy points in your posts! The money issue? what money issue, you insinuate but have nothing to substantiate.

Season tickets - more sold this season than the last season we were in the Championship.

As more and more people are finding out everyday, you are a liar and a coward!
