Burnley's Mears: The derby day is massive

TYRONE Mears says Sunday’s clash with bitter rivals Blackburn Rovers has taken on greater significance on the back of Wigan’s late winner.

Burnley were denied the chance to move closer to safety when Hugo Rodallega headed home in the last of four stoppage time minutes, keeping the Clarets three points adrift of 17th-placed West Ham, who could create an even bigger gap if they beat Wolves tomorrow night.

Right-back Mears described the general feeling in the dressing room as “really down” after the final whistle at the DW Stadium. But said the upcoming derby could provide the perfect tonic.

“It doesn’t get much bigger than that game for this club and it’s massive in terms of us trying to stay in the league as well now,” said the 27-year-old.

“It’s huge for the fans as well so we really need to turn up and put on a good show.

“No motivation will be needed for that game. The fans will be right behind us and I’m sure it’s going to turn for us in that game.”

The Clarets had looked on course for a well-earned point – only their second of the season on their travels – and their first goalless draw in 59 games until Rodallega managed to breach a defence that had previously stood up to everything thrown at them.

Mears admitted it was hard to take, particularly after Wigan scored seconds after David Nugent had been denied by goalkeeper Chris Kirkland at the opposite end.

“We worked so hard with our preparations for this game. We played quite well in the first half and then near the end we could have snatched all three points. But it’s gone the other way and we’re really down about it in the dressing room,” he said.

“This was a really big game for us and it’s taken Wigan a good few points ahead of us now.

“But we have to keep our heads, there are still games to be played and other teams will slip up between now and the end of the season. It’s important now that we start again against Blackburn.

“That’s a big derby for us. It would be a great game for us to pick up three points in and start looking upwards.”

Mears added that the players had been boosted by defeats for West Ham and Hull, while Wolves had their 2-1 lead pegged back in the Midlands derby with Aston Villa in Saturday’s early kick-off.

“The other results have not gone too badly,” said the former Derby and Hammers defender.

“The bottom half of the league is still quite poor really and you look at it and think we still have a good chance of getting out of it. It’s still achievable if we can start picking up some points.

“We’ve seven games to go and we still have a great chance to stay in this league, that’s how we have to look at it.”

I probably speak for all Rovers fans (well, except for the really bitter and twisted ones!) in that I really hope you stay up this year. It's good enough for the mighty blue and white halves to trounce you home and away and categorically hammer you in the points table but genuinely wish you well in your efforts to stay up. In footballing times where 4 clubs win everything because of the massive resources at their disposal, the east lancs rivalry and banter keeps the game real!

Rovers will turn up relaxed but ready. The only way Burnley can win is if we are lax in our planning but that should not happen.
.
Meanwhile the pressure put on the Clarets by their fans will be a burden for several reasons -
.
You have not beaten Rovers for nearly 31 years.
You are in deep relegation trouble.
You defenders and keeper are nervous wrecks at present.
You know Rovers stepped up a couple of gears when we needed to at Ewood.
You know we have proved we are a class premiership side and you have been found out after catching a couple of teams out early season before things settled.
.
Like barney above as long as we beat you I would like the derby again next season but just can't see you escaping now with the home run inns both Wolves and West Ham have along with games in hand and better goal diff - sorry but you are down.

Im quite optimistic about the derby. Theyve only won one away game all season and have key players injured including Nelsen who is consistently their best player and the only player they have who could hold down a place in a top 6 side.

Defensively we are improving and there will be a hostile atmosphere at the Turf. Take us to win narrowly on the day. Unfortunately a draw is of little use : we need to go all out for the win, which we will ( successfully).

I cant think of a Burnley player who would get into the Rovers starting squad, so on paper we should win this game.
But its an intense derby and all normal expectations will be out of the window, I can see a draw which is no good for the Clarets, but just fine for the Rovers.

In view of the state of the table and the fact games are running out a draw would deprive us of 2 valuable points and be a moral victory by Blackburn.

You dont need the points so why not go through the motions and let us have that win. After all there are 5-6 players in Claret n Blue doing that week in week out. Maybe they know something about the club which we dont.

Apparently not significantly enough Mears.Rovers have sold out with a lot of disappointed supporters unable to go due to demand significantly out numbering supply.Just checked your site for ticket availability and can't believe you are struggling to shift 20,000 home tickets against your arch rivals.Move the Burnley fans out of the cricket field stand and into the empty seats in the other three home stands and send the remaining tickets still unsold to Ewood. We will sell them no problem and at the same time allow another 1,500 Rovers supporters the chance to watch their team and at the same time make Burnley fc more money. It's not going to compromise anybody's safety and Burnley will be guaranteed their first complete sell out of the season. It's a win win situation for everybody involved.

Lets All get behind the team and show the same spirit that got us promoted in the first place. We are not dead and buried yet no matter what anybody says. Write Burnley off at your peril. We have always proved the doubters wrong, Ive got a feeling this fairytale has a very happy ending starting with 3 points against that scum from down the M65 on Sunday!!!!

Think there will be a seniding off on Sunday and a key penalty, probably awarded to us. We will as at Ewood take an early lead, then its 1-1 and qa Nugent winner in the second half.

Very confident about this. They are very poor away from home and form counts for little in these derby games.
