FULL-TIME: Wigan Athletic 1 Burnley 0

HUGO Rodallega's stoppage time winner broke Burnley's hearts, and almost certainly turned the Clarets' Premier League survival bid into a mission impossible.

Brian Laws' battlers looked on course for their first goalless draw in 59 games, and would have deserved it, after a determined performance at the DW Stadium.

A point was of no real use to either side in their respective relegation battles, and both tried to win the game.

After a tentative first half, in which Wade Elliott headed a Gary Caldwell header onto the post in response to Burnley's early chances, the two teams went for it after the break.

Graham Alexander narrowly missed the target after a free kick was played short 25 yards out and Martin Paterson volleyed onto the to of the crossbar either side of Elliott again producing a goalline clearance, this time from a Rodallega header.

Brian Jensen later produced two superb saves, from Jason Scotland then Mohamed Diame, but Burnley still had plenty to give and David Nugent was unlucky to be denied by Chris Kirkland after bursting onto substitute Robbie Blake's throughball.

Wigan went forward again, substitute Victor Moses got away from Stephen Jordan to cut inside from the right, and his delivery was cruelly headed in by Rodallega at the far post.

Oh Dear Oh Dear Oh Dear... -=-

Currently 3 adrift from safety and if West Ham and Wolves win their games in hand then it becomes 7 points.. -=-

Only 21 points left for you to pick up! -=-

Portsmouth are only 11 points behind with 1 game in hand, so that could become just 8! -=-

Looks like your going down quicker than your sisters.

As they say, the table doesn't lie. However while you are only 3 points behind safety there is always a chance. Problem is that if the hammers win their game in hand your pretty much stuffed because it's out of your hands then really! Still, whatever the position it'll have no effect on next weeks match. I'm not a rovers fan gullible to believe we'll turn you over because of our respective league positions. Although I will obviously celebrate if we do put a nail in the coffin, but hey, that's what rivalry is about and you lot wouldn't have it any other way!

I wouldn't crow or send rude comments. I would like to repeat what I have said all season. The team was never good enough for the Premiership. You need a certain skill to survive in that league.
The Clarets lacked experience and skill and it showed in the naive approach in games. They were continually bounced not only by the top teams but by the teams in the bottom half of the table.
I wouldn't shout or crow at the team and the management because it would be like shouting at schoolboys when they lose games against experienced men.
It is a shame that the dream only lasted for a few weeks. The only thing that the spectators got were acouple of wins before the other teams had settled down and then they had to watch whilst boys tried to play men and the manager could not find a tactical scheme that would help them.

We are in the 31st year since the Dingles beat us. We enter the 32nd year on April 14th 2010! (1979 was the last time - John Lennon was still alive and Dire Straites had just realesed Sultans of Swing!)

Yorkshire Claret says...
11:43am Sun 21 Mar 10

I have just watched the match back in full on vision Sports. To be fair it was a good match looking back on it, with the usual reffing mistakes. Wigan had 2 penalty shouts, the first was a stonewall, if the second had been given we'd have been really unlucky. But after 10 mins Nugent was clear through and was proper taken out by i think Melchiott. This was blatent, Nugent had to go of for treatment, yet the ref saw nothing in this. This should have been at the leats a free kick and a booking! I think if the ref looks back on it he'll no he made a grave error. My point is when matches so vital such as this, how can these decisions be taken or not in this case? There is so much at stake now financially and these mistakes surely need to start being looked into? 3 points was vital for both teams to win. We came off worse and the better team deserved the 3 on the day. But had the Nugent free kick been given and a card produced this could have changed the outcome, like wise Wigans stonewall penalty. We played good football but its balls in the back of the net which count and this we are not doing. There was a quite clear argument between the beast and Akexander in the game which rumbled on for a bit. We dont need this. Sort it out between theirselves and not for all fans and team mates too see.

I said we needed at least 6 points from the Pompew, Wolves and Wigan matches to stan a chance of survival. this has not happened, so now i feel championship football is on the cards.

I know you Rovers fans would love to brand us the shittest team ever to play in this the best league in the world but this would not be true. We can play good football but lack the finishing touch.

I dont want to dwell and make excuses but I do feelnthe decision that Coyle took to abandon us and ultimately take every member of the backroom and coaching staff has had a massive effect. This has unsettled the players and any fan from any other team who says this sort of exodus of staff and coaches would not have an effect is a bear faced liar!

The board have made a mistake employing Laws with the task to keep us up. A change now would just be stupid, but we need a different manager for the Championship next year. Laws was the cheap option. Wee needed somebody with experience in the prem and relegation battles. There were many options but these were not taken!

Another worrying thing for me is the team we will have next year. We need to keep these boys together! 10 players out of contract in the summer is worrying. Plus the fact that we will loose some of our better player to the prem next year concerns me. Eagles may go to Spurs, there have been a couple of reports suggesting this. Nugent is gone. We'll probably loose Mears too. I would hope big Kev Mac would stay, but i have a feeling that he will be pinched too. The board need to do all they can to not let the destruction of the team happen. They have said that winning promotion to the premier league has financially secured Burnleys future for at least 10 years, and with a wage cap in place there is no need to cash in on players or break the bank. When we go down I feel we have a very good strong championship squad, who know eachother very well, so keep them together. I feel if we do we will bounce back up. We're going to be a yo yo team i think.

Finally eventhough we are going down, this I accepted last week, 3 points agains Rovers next week would make my season. So come on you Clarets. UTS

This was one of the three remaing games left ( Hull and Blackburn being the others ) as potentially winnable so defeat is a big blow.

We are still not down though. Gap is only three points. It needs to be 6-7 points adrift before we start writing it off. Funnily enough as with Blackburn fans I have a funny feeling about next week. Feel we will just edge it 2-1 on the day and keep our survival chanes well and truly alive.
