PORTSMOUTH’S financial problems are unlikely to prove terminal in the coming weeks, but Burnley would be one of the main beneficiaries should the worst come to the worst.
Pompey are scheduled to face a winding-up order in the High Court tomorrow and, although it is expected that they will continue operating, the Premier League table would be thrown into chaos if they were put into liquidation before the end of the season.
Portsmouth’s results this season would be expunged but Burnley, who lost at Fratton Park in December, would gain ground on some of their rivals.
Bolton would drop into a two-team relegation zone having won at Portsmouth, while Blackburn Rovers would also lose three points after a 3-1 home victory in November.
If Portsmouth were to go into administration rather than out of business, they would be deducted nine points.
