STEVEN Thompson found the net as a strong Burnley reserve team came from behind to win at Bolton Wanderers tonight.
The Clarets named an experienced line-up including Thompson, Michael Duff, Fernando Guerrero and Christian Kalvenes and claimed victory at Leyland thanks to young substitute Joe McKee’s winner in the 84th minute.
Bolton, who named a more youthful line-up with only Nicky Hunt having significant first-team experience, went close through Stuart McDonald early on before taking the lead in the eighth minute when Adam Blakeman’s stunning 25-yard volley left Clarets keeper Diego Penny with no chance.
Wes Fletcher then saw an effort saved for Burnley after a surging run before Brian Easton was denied by Bolton stopper Adam Bogdan.
Penny denied Michael O’Halloran before half time but Burnley deserved to be level and Guerrero, who started on the right wing before switching to the left to allow Easton to move into central midfield, was unlucky to have a penalty appeal turned down.
Easton put a shot wide after the interval but Burnley did finally get the equaliser in the 70th minute as Chris Stokes was harshly adjudged to have handled Chris Anderson’s shot.
Thompson stepped up to take the penalty and easily found the right-hand corner, with first-team boss Owen Coyle watching on from the sidelines.
Easton was then denied by Bogdan after a pass from Guerrero before the Clarets moved in front with six minutes left.
Kalvenes made ground on the left flank before finding Thompson, who laid the ball back to Alex-Ray Harvey.
Harvey could have gone for goal but instead coolly played in 16-year-old McKee, who notched his first goal for the reserves since his move from Scottish side Livingston in the summer.
