JON Walters is hoping he can be the man to capitalise on Robbie Brady’s set-piece prowess for Burnley this season.

Clarets new boy Walters and record signing Brady have both impressed in pre-season, each scoring two goals while the latter has also delivered a couple of assists from his set-pieces.

This will be the first time the two have played together at club level but they have struck up an understanding on the international pitch.

That Irish influence could be translated to Turf Moor this season, with Walters now sharing a club and international dressing room with Brady, Jeff Hendrick, Stephen Ward and Kevin Long.

“I’ve played with them all a lot from the last few years,” Walters said of the familiar faces at Turf Moor.

“Robbie’s delivery is up there with the best I’ve played, if he can do a few more of them I’ll be pretty happy.

“He’s a good player to have, the experience of Wardy as well, he’s been in and around the Ireland set-up for years. I’ve played with Jeff a lot, even up front with Jeff just in behind. Then Kevin who came in in the summer (for Ireland) and did ever so well.

“It makes it a lot easier (to settle), when we go away at international levels we speak about clubs and what it’s like and what the training is like, so you have an idea anyway.

“It’s a group I get on with really well so it makes it a lot easier.”

Walters, a £2million addition from Stoke City earlier this summer, will compete for a place in attack alongside Andre Gray, Sam Vokes and Ashley Barnes, while he can also play out wide.

His arrival at Turf Moor comes at a similar time in the club’s progression to when he arrived in the Potteries.

At that point Stoke were looking to establish themselves as a top flight club, something they did during his time at the club.

And Walters will try and help Burnley reach safety as soon as they can this season as they look for a third successive top flight campaign.

Achieving survival is the first aim for Sean Dyche’s side this season and Walters knows it will be a battle, especially early on with Burnley handed a tough start to the season, particularly away from home.

“At Stoke there were times when we were a result or two away during the season, you have to get to that safety point as soon as you can,” the 33-year-old said.

“We’ve got a tough start and we’ll see how the land lies after a few games. They had an excellent home record last year, not so good away but hopefully we can improve that.

“The main thing is staying in the Premier League.”
