BURNLEY produced one of their better away performances of the season but suffered a familiar outcome as they were beaten 3-1 by Everton.

The Clarets had their chances at Goodison and had levelled early in the second half through Sam Vokes’ penalty.

Sean Dyche’s side more than played their part in an open and entertaining game but just as it looked like an impressive point was creeping into view they were undone by two quick goals from the hosts, who recorded an eighth straight Goodison victory in the Premier League.

The first chance fell to the Toffees on four minutes, with Romelu Lukaku sweeping a shot straight at Tom Heaton after a cut back by Mason Holgate, but that only led to a strong spell for the Clarets.

Robbie Brady’s free-kick clipped the wall and flew over and from the corner Michael Keane’s header was cleared off the line by Ross Barkley, before Matt Lowton’s cross just evaded Vokes and Brady as they looked to pounce.

Vokes, who was back in the starting line-up for Andre Gray, had two excellent chances just after the half hour. First he latched on to Joey Barton’s volleyed pass, but was forced slightly wide by the backtracking Ashley Williams and ended up clipping a shot into the chest of Joel Robles.

Two minutes later Phil Jagielka’s scuffed backpass sent Vokes in but the finish lacked power and was again saved by Robles.

At the other end Holgate played a one-two with Lukaku before his shot across goal was pushed away by Heaton.

Everton started the second half brightly and after Heaton had denied half-time substitute Enner Valencia at the near post they took the lead from a corner.

Ashley Williams flicked Leighton Baines’ delivery on with his knee and Jagielka was free at the back post to head home, with the ball over the line before Heaton could claw it away.

But the Clarets deficit didn’t last long. Jeff Hendrick’s pass sent Vokes into the area but he was going well away from goal when Robles rashly brought him down and the Wales international made no mistake from the spot, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.

Everton came close to taking the lead on the hour mark through Kevin Mirallas, who minutes before had sent a tame shot straight at Heaton from inside the area.

This time he scuffed an effort from Baines’ pull-back but saw the ball ricochet back to him from Ben Mee, but he could only hit the post from six yards.

Burnley’s grip on a Goodison point came loose with just under 20 minutes to go.

There was a huge stroke of fortune to Everton’s second. Barkley collected Mirallas pass outside the area and jinked his way into the box but his 15-yard shot from an angle didn’t look dangerous until it deflected off first Keane and then Mee and looped over Heaton’s dive and in off the post.

Two minutes later the game was put to bed as Lukaku turned Keane on the right hand side of the area before poking a shot past Heaton at the near post.

There was still time for Barkley to clear another effort off the line, this time heading away Stephen Ward’s looping header in the dying moments.
