BURNLEY defender Michael Keane played the full game as he made his England debut in the 1-0 defeat to Germany.

The 24-year-old turned in an assured display in Dortmund but England were narrowly beaten by their hosts in what was Gareth Southgate's first game in charge after being given the job on a permanent basis.

Keane was presented with his first England cap by former Three Lions boss Glenn Hoddle before kick-off.

Southgate had been to keen to look at a back three and Keane lined up on the right alongside Chris Smalling and Gary Cahill.

He was in action early as he sent a left-footed half-volley narrowly over from a seventh minute corner, while the Clarets ace also displayed his confidence on the ball with some crisp and accurate passing out of defence.

Keane is the first outfield Burnley player to be capped for England since Martin Dobson in 1974.

But his Three Lions debut follows hot on the heels of Tom Heaton's first appearance for England in May last year when he came on in a pre-Euro 2016 friendly against Australia at the Stadium of Light, before winning a second cap later in 2016 when he played the second half of a friendly with Spain at Wembley.

Keane has gone from strength to strength since making his move to Turf Moor from Manchester United, initially on loan ahead of the 2014/15 campaign before making that move permanent in the January of that season.

He had to wait until the start of last season before becoming a regular in Sean Dyche's side but since then he has missed just two of the last 75 league games and he has played every minute of Burnley's Premier League campaign this season.

Keane made his 50th Premier League appearance for the Clarets in the goalless draw at Sunderland last weekend and afterwards admitted it would be a dream to make his Three Lions debut this week.

"It's going to be a special occasion and it's great to be a part of it. If I can get on and make my debut then I'll be over the moon. It's something I've dreamt of since I was a young boy," he said.

"I feel like I've been doing well, I feel like I've been defending well and I've been good on the ball as well."

Keane becomes the 76th Burnley player to earn international recognition with the Clarets and the 26th to play for England while at Turf Moor.

Burnley's growing contingent of internationals sees seven away with their countries this week.

Robbie Brady is suspended for the Republic of Ireland's showdown with Wales in Dublin on Friday but should he play for Ireland in their friendly with Iceland next week he will become the 77th Burnley player to represent their country while at the club.
