DEAN Marney has called on Burnley to play with more ‘intensity and aggression’ as they seek to end their away day woes at Stoke City this afternoon.

The midfielder is winning his fitness battle to continue a record of starting every Premier League game this season, and he is hoping the trip to the Potteries will signal a change in fortunes on the road for the Clarets.

While Burnley have won four home games this season they have just one point from five away fixtures, shipping 13 goals in the process, and they have come under pressure in most of their away assignments so far.

Performances reached a nadir in the last away game, a 4-0 defeat at West Brom, and Marney knows things have to change if the Clarets are to find a winning formula on the road.

“We spoke about it a lot, why we’re a bit different at home and maybe we don’t play with the same intensity and aggression that we do at home,” the 32-year-old said.

“It’s important we look to change that, hopefully starting at Stoke.”

“I think anyone coming to Turf Moor will know they’re going to get a game, it’s trying to replicate that away from home, which is massively important for us.”

Tom Heaton has been a busy man away from home this season, but in front of the Turf Moor faithful Heaton, or Paul Robinson against Manchester City last weekend, have had less to do, with the Clarets looking a solid proposition defensively on their own patch.

“Away from home it’s a different story, the keepers are doing unbelievably well away from home,” said Marney.

“We’re a different animal at home, maybe a bit more aggressive and go at teams a bit more, where away we’re a little bit different. We’ve spoken about it and we’re looking to address it because we need to pick up points away from home.”

Two years ago Burnley broke their duck away from home with a 2-1 win at Stoke, and they will be hoping history can repeat itself at the Bet365 Stadium today.

“That would be nice, we’d take that result now. They’ve got some quality players and it’s going to be a tough game,” said Marney.

“It’s important we go there and do what we’re good at.”

After today’s clash at Stoke Burnley face a London double header before Christmas, with trips to West Ham and Tottenham in the space of four days.

But Marney is hoping a first win on the road could give the squad confidence to go on and repeat the trick.

“Hopefully. Sometimes that does happen, you win one and pick up two or three results straight after,” he said.

“The gaffer identified it, it’s getting back to what we’re good at away from home and concentrating on ourselves rather than maybe trying to change the way we play.”
