THE Match of the Day pundits had sympathy for Burnley and Sean Dyche after the Clarets were denied a clear penalty against Manchester City.

Dyche was bemused at Andre Marriner's failure to award his side a spot-kick with the score still 0-0 when Nicolas Otamendi barged into the back of Jeff Hendrick inside the area.

Having made his point in his Match of the Day interview, it was a view supported by Phil Neville and Danny Murphy, who were on the sofa on Saturday night.

When Gary Lineker suggested to Neville that Dyche may have a point on the penalty decision, Neville said: "Just a little bit. It was definitely a penalty, it was clumsy from Otamendi. I think they were offside, Jeff Hendrick was offside, [but] the linesman didn't give it.

"That is so clumsy from Otamendi, there's no way he can win the ball. He's not even looking at the ball, his eyes are looking elsewhere. He's body charged him in the box and Burnley are unlucky not to have a penalty there. The linesman is blinded by the sun [for the offside]."

Neville and Murphy had begun their analysis of Burnley's 2-1 defeat, which was third in the Match of the Day running order, with an assessment of Fernandinho's performance for Manchester City.

After discussing the decision not to award the Clarets a penalty, Neville praised their performance, but flagged up the soft nature of the goals conceded.

"Burnley played well, but the last two games they've been very un-Burnley like in conceding poor goals," he said.

Burnley-City was shown after Swansea's 5-4 win over Crystal Palace and Chelsea's 2-1 success over Tottenham Hotspur. It came ahead of Liverpool beating Sunderland, Leicester's 2-2 draw with Middlesbrough and Hull's stalemate with West Brom.
