SAM Vokes believes Burnley need to improve their game management on the road as they seek a solution to their away day woes.

The Clarets have lost all three Premier League away games so far this season, as well as going down to an extra-time defeat at Accrington Stanley in the EFL Cup.

Vokes’ consolation goal in the 3-1 defeat to Southampton was the first they have scored away from Turf Moor this season, but they’ve already shipped nine in defeats to the Saints, Leicester and Chelsea.

At Chelsea the Clarets were 2-0 down at the break, but against champions Leicester they conceded twice in three minutes after a promising opening, and on Sunday they conceded three times in 14 minutes as the game quickly got away from them on the south coast.

Vokes insists that is something Burnley are aware of and it is an issue they are keen to resolve, although life on the road in the top flight gets no easier, with Old Trafford next on the agenda after Everton visit Turf Moor on Saturday.

“It’s something that we need to work on,” said Burnley’s top scorer so far this season, who netted his second goal of the campaign on Sunday.

“We can’t go through the season doing that. Obviously we’ve been to some tough places but that is what the Premier League is about. You get punished if you’re not ready so we need to look at that and work on it.

“We need to manage games and stay in them for longer. If you can nick one it’s all well and good but you’ve just got to stay in games for as long as possible.”

While Tom Heaton’s heroics at St Mary’s kept the score down for Burnley, Vokes’ penalty was a highlight for the Southampton-born frontman, who netted in front of friends and family.

It was the second Premier League goal of his career and having started both World Cup qualifying games for Wales during the international break the 26-year-old is full of confidence at the moment, and despite Burnley’s latest setback away from home, he believes the Clarets can take heart from their start to the season.

“I feel brilliant,” he said. “It was a tough afternoon but I think we’ve looked good over the last few weeks.

“Obviously it was a blow against Arsenal late on but the performances have been there so we just need to get the results to go with it.

“Every minute and every week I’m feeling more confident.”
