CLARETS new boy Steven Defour said he ‘couldn’t have dreamed’ how well his debut would go after Saturday’s sensational 2-0 win over Liverpool.

The Belgian midfielder has created a buzz around the club since breaking the transfer record with his £7.5million switch from Anderlecht earlier this week.

And he lived up to his reputation with an excellent performance - among a host of others in Clarets shirts - which he capped by setting up Andre Gray for the second goal that stunned the Kop club into submission.

Sam Vokes had already got Turf Moor rocking with his second-minute stunner when the 28-year-old Belgium international picked up a loose ball and surged forward before sliding a pass to Gray, who did the rest in style.

“It was really amazing, I couldn’t have dreamed any better,” Defour said afterwards, “A win against Liverpool at home with the amazing fans was all that I hoped for.

“Liverpool is a big team. Last week they won against Arsenal and for us to win now feels very good.”

It was Burnley’s first victory over the Reds in 42 years and saw them earn a Premier League win at the second attempt, unlike two years ago when it took them 11 games to collect their first three points.

But they had to work hard for it, with the Jurgen Klopp’s side having 80 per cent of the possession on a lung-busting afternoon for Dyche’s super-fit stars.

“Yes, it was physically demanding because we were only two in midfield and (Roberto) Firmino was coming into the midfield, (Daniel) Sturridge came inside, so it was really demanding,” said Defour.

“Also, we couldn’t keep the ball long enough to rest a little bit, but that’s the Premier League and I have to adapt it.

“I am fit and I will have to improve again and again.

“In Belgium it’s slower. Here it goes from one side (of the pitch) to the other really fast; in Belgium there is more resting.

“But I have played in the Champions League and I have played at international level, so it’s similar - but I have to do it every week now.

“I have to adapt and then my physical (condition) will go up automatically.”

He added: “Of course it was important to get this win. We lost last week and having two losses at home, it starts to get difficult.

“It’s not the end of the world, but it gets difficult. To get the three points today, it was important.”

Defour says the main aim for the season is remaining in the top flight, and he thinks his link-up with Gray could play a part in that.

“I hope we stay in the Premier League, that’s the big goal,” he said.

“We have a lot of games ahead of us and we’re looking at game after game. We will see.

“I think I can bring my experience and the ability to keep the ball in the team, trying to be as good as I can.

“It’s good to have someone fast like Andre in front of me so I can get a good pass to him, which happened.

“I hope we can see a lot of that in the next weeks.”
