BURNLEY claimed a first league win over Liverpool in 42 years as Sam Vokes and Andre Gray scored their first Premier League goals on a memorable afternoon for the Clarets.

There will be no long wait for a first Premier League victory this season. Sean Dyche’s side are up and running and they did so in style.

Liverpool ended the game with over 80 per cent possession but it was in masterclass in how to play without the ball from Burnley.

For all of the ball they saw Jurgen Klopp’s men had ran out of ideas long before the end. On the other hand, when the Clarets saw the ball in the final third they were ruthless.

It took them less than two minutes to take the lead. Ragnar Klavan and Nathaniel Clyne tried to play out from the back, but the former’s cross field pass to the latter put him in trouble, and Clyne’s pass inside was intercepted by Gray.

He turned and found Vokes on the edge of the area, and the Wales international turned back on to his right foot before lashing an unstoppable shot past Simon Mignolet for his first ever Premier League goal.

As the visitors looked to get back in the game Philippe Coutinho twice curled shots over from almost the same spot on the pitch, around 25 yards from goal.

Jurgen Klopp’s men were seeing plenty of the ball but struggling to break the Clarets down, with Adam Lallana’s scuffed shot on the turn from inside the area an easy save for Tom Heaton.

Daniel Sturridge was next to try his luck in Liverpool’s bright green away kit, sending a shot from 22-yards on his left foot wide of Tom Heaton’s goal.

For all of Liverpool’s possession it was the Clarets who doubled their advantage eight minutes before the break.

Record signing Steven Defour won the ball in midfield and burst over the halfway line, collecting a ricochet on his way, before playing Gray in on the right. Last season’s top scorer cut inside James Milner and Klavan before superbly finding the bottom corner from 15 yards.

Lancashire Telegraph:

Coutinho was continuing to pepper the Jimmy McIlroy stand late in the first half, this time crashing a shot over from just inside the penalty area.

The Brazilian did hit the target early in the second half after smart build-up play from Sturridge - who had already dragged a right-footed shot wide after the break - and Georgino Wijnaldum, but his shot was straight at Heaton.

The Clarets captain was in action again a minute later, clawing Firmino’s drive from distance behind, before Sturridge again lashed wide after Milner was incorrectly deemed to have kept the ball in.

At the other end Gray sent a left-footed shot wide on the spin after the Clarets had stolen possession high up the pitch.

Jurgen Klopp made a trio of substitutions to try and get Liverpool back into the game and Marko Grujic tested Heaton with his first touch, sending a dipping half-volley goalwards which the England captain tipped over.

The visitors looked to be running out of ideas as the game progressed, and a ball tossed hopefully into the area fell to Coutinho, but his drive was blocked by Matt Lowton, and that was the visitors’ final chance
