BURNLEY are closing in on their first signing of the summer but the deal for Iceland winger Johann Berg Gudmundsson may not be completed before the Clarets head to France next week.

Charlton Athletic accepted a bid of £2.5million plus up to a further £1million in add-ons for the 25-year-old on Tuesday night and the player has now agreed personal terms.

But with Gudmundsson having only finished his Euro 2016 campaign with surprise package Iceland on Sunday, time is running out for the deal to be completed before Sean Dyche’s side jet off to their training camp in Évian-les-Bains on Monday.

Iceland’s players returned to the capital Reykjavik on Monday and most will now enjoy a break before they return to pre-season training with their respective clubs.

That may mean the deal isn’t tied up until Burnley are back from their base on the shore of Lake Geneva on Saturday, July 16.

It is unlikely there will be any new arrivals before Burnley go away for five days, with the camp concluding with a friendly against Stade Nyon, in Switzerland, on the other side of the lake, on the Friday night.

Dyche was keen to strengthen his options on the flanks in the January transfer window but saw interest in Brentford’s Alan Judge knocked back, before Tottenham winger Alex Pritchard opted for a loan move to West Bromwich Albion instead of Turf Moor.

Judge, who has just a year remaining on his contract at Griffin Park, would almost certainly have been a target again this summer, but he broke his leg in April.

That has led the Clarets to turn to Gudmundsson, who recorded 11 assists in the Championship last season despite playing for a side who were relegated, and impressed during Iceland’s remarkable run to the quarter-finals in France.

Championship outfit Norwich had seemed to be in pole position to land Gudmundsson, with Addicks boss Russell Slade admitting he was likely to move on to pastures new this summer, but Burnley acted swiftly this week to tie up a deal with Charlton.

The Clarets also retain an interest in Aston Villa midfielder Ashley Westwood, who is due to jet off to Austria with his current side today.

Having lost Joey Barton to Rangers Burnley require reinforcements in midfield and Westwood, who has four years remaining on a £40,000 per-week deal, is interested in returning to the Premier League.

Meanwhile Burnley have not yet received another offer from Leicester City for Michael Keane.

The 23-year-old defender rejected the Clarets offer of a new four-year contract earlier this week, but while that is likely to give the Foxes renewed hope that they can capture their man they have not returned with another bid yet, having seen an offer that could have risen to a total of £15million rejected earlier in the summer.
