BURNLEY might be heading to the Premier League for the third time in seven seasons next year but it all began with a famous day under the Wembley arch.
It was a glorious sunny day on May 25, 2009, when the Clarets hordes headed south on Bank Holiday Monday for the Championship play-off final against Sheffield United, having seen off Reading in the semi-finals.
It had already been a memorable campaign but it was about to end in the best possible fashion as Wade Elliott’s 13th minute goal sent Burnley to the top flight for the first time since 1975/76.
Sheffield United had finished in third, two places and four points better off than the Clarets, but having come within two minutes of Wembley in the League Cup semi-finals Owen Coyle’s side headed to the capital in confident mood and they ended the day victorious to spark wild scenes of celebration.
