GEORGE Boyd insists Burnley are feeling no pressure in the promotion race after another dramatic weekend saw them end it at the top of the Championship table.

The Clarets kicked off the weekend with a 1-0 win on Friday night at Lancashire rivals Preston, with a performance that Boyd described as showing a bit of ‘arrogance’.

On Saturday Brighton claimed a 3-1 win at Charlton but Middlesbrough failed to break down Ipswich at the Riverside Stadium.

That leaves the top three level on 87 points with just three goals separating them. One of the division’s runaway sides is going to end up in a play-off position.

But Boyd believes Burnley’s unbeaten run of 21 league games bodes well for the final two fixtures of the season.

“We’re not feeling the pressure, we’re just excited to come out and play,” said Boyd.

“We were full of confidence coming into Preston and you could see that from the first half hour, there was a bit of arrogance to our play.

“It’s three games in six days and it was important to get at least seven points from that.

“There was late drama on Tuesday (against Middlesbrough) but (on Friday) I thought we played really well, we should have scored two or three at least.”

Burnley haven’t been beaten in the Championship since Boxing Day and that unbeaten run, which is the club’s longest in a single season since the second world war, has seen confidence flow through Sean Dyche’s side.

Boyd himself believes he is now hitting his best form of the season and the ‘arrogance’ that was on show at Deepdale is coming from the winning mindset that run has produced.

“I think we’re more and more confident,” he said. “We’re going into games knowing we’re going to win. Losing isn’t coming into the mindset at the minute.

“We’re on such a good run, in all the promotions I’ve had you have that feeling and it’s exactly the same here.”

Burnley dominated at Deepdale and could easily have won by more than the solitary goal that came from Joey Barton’s deflected free-kick.

In the opening half an hour they took advantage of Preston’s decision to start with three at the back, and despite Simon Grayson’s decision to change shape after half an hour they remained on top, and Boyd felt it was one of the best team performances of the season.

“They had three at the back and we exploited that,” he said. “There was so many gaps in between and wide and the full-backs were trying to get in. Joey got in so many times down the sides.

“We exploited them early on. That’s us at our best when we’re passing and moving and getting in behind times.

“It was similar to the Brentford game. Had we taken the chances it would have been a similar scoreline. That’s one of the best games we’ve played this season. It was important to get the performance and the results.

“In regards of how big the game was it was one of the best performances of the season.”

There might be hardly anything separating the top three, but Middlesbrough and Brighton’s final day battle at the Riverside is a bonus for Burnley.

And rather than they worry about finishing third, Boyd and the Clarets have their sights set on the title.

“We had the belief that we would win the title when we came back down,” he said. “We had meetings to stay that and we’re right on course now.

“Nobody wants to come second, we want the title.

“If you come second you get the smaller trophy but everyone wants to win titles, to win it to get in the Premier League would be brilliant.”
