BURNLEY boss Sean Dyche said the Clarets performance in their 1-0 derby victory over Preston was ‘an advert’ for how he wants his side to play.

Joey Barton’s deflected free-kick in the fifth minute sent Burnley back to the top of the Championship table and extended the unbeaten to 21 league games.

It was a dominant display at Deepdale from Dyche’s side, who hit the woodwork three times and had numerous chances to add to their early advantage.

“I'm really pleased in the circumstances as well,” said the Clarets chief.

“It's a local derby and a lot had been made of that. We had to see through that, control our game and I thought we did that well.

“There was a number of good performances. Vokesy, Boydy's in a rich vein of form, Scotty Arfield was good with the endless work, Joey, the two centre halves, everybody played in their part in a thorough performance.

“It's how I want the team to play, that's almost an advert for it. I want us to defend properly, attack, mix our play, play longer, through the thirds, we showed a good mixed performance. The only thing was that the scoreline wasn't more.”

Victories over Queens Park Rangers and Charlton in their final two games will see Burnley promoted back to the Premier League.

And two repeats of the performance they produced at Preston should see six points secured.

“It's the quality of possession,” Dyche added. “They probably had more but we had the quality of possession and chances. The quality of our chances was a different level I felt.

“You do come away just wondering. It's late and they get a free-kick and you're thinking surely not.

“Fortunately, with the good habits we've shown, they didn't really get a look in. Heats had one proper save to make all night.

“I used the word clarity a lot and I thought that was on show. We talk about automacity and that's the ability to do it properly all the time.

“We do it in training so when it's a game we can deliver and we're showing good signs.”

Dyche also praised Simon Grayson’s side for their defensive efforts, with North End players making several blocks as the Clarets laid siege to Chris Kirkland’s goal, especially in the first half.

“First half we had three or four great chances,” said Dyche. “Credit to them they've thrown themselves at every chance.

“Scotty's was going in the corner, they block, Andre's was going in the corner, they block that as well.

“Second half we hit the post, we hit the bar, Joey's got in behind and gone for the finish, I thought he might square it. Vokesy and Ben Mee have had headers – there's six and I haven't seen it back yet.”
