MATCHWINNER Joey Barton has eyes for the Championship title after firing the Clarets back to the top of the table in a 1-0 win at Preston North End on Friday night.

The Burnley midfielder scored the only goal of the game with a deflected sixth minute free kick and after the match targeted keeping hold of top spot in the remaining two weeks of the season.

"Our intention is to win the league," said Barton.

"This team never knows when it is beaten. It is just a privilege and pleasure to be a part of it."

The Clarets are a point ahead of Middlesbrough, who host Ipswich on Saturday afternoon, while third-placed Brighton - three points behind Burnley - visit Charlton Athletic.

Barton added of the win over Preston: "It's just another three points, we wont get too carried away. There is a lot still to play for. If we win our games then no-one can do anything about it

"We had enough chances to win a couple of games and you are always a bit worried if you don’t take your chances

"We are the fittest team in the league and it shows. We are prepared for whatever comes."

And Burnley winger George Boyd paid tribute to Barton, and the Clarets supporters who travelled in their numbers to roar their team to victory at Deepdale.

"He (Barton) has been fantastic since he has come in. He has rejuvenated us and he is a leader," said Boyd who added: "The fans have been fantastic for us.

Two more wins and we are up and that is all we can concentrate on."
