BURNLEY’S involvement in the FA Cup has ended following a fourth round defeat at holders Arsenal.

The Clarets trailed in the 19th minute to Calum Chambers’ outside-of-the-boot goal - only the second of the right back’s career, with the other also being scored against Burnley in the Premier League last season.

Sam Vokes got Burnley back in it on the half-hour with a bullet header past David Ospina from Tendayi Darikwa’s exquisite cross from the right.

It was reward for the spell of pressure Sean Dyche’s side had begun to enjoy.

And the Clarets continued where they had left off with a bright start to the second half, and Scott Arfield had a shot spilled by goalkeeper David Ospina.

But Arsenal’s quality began to show, and at the end of a fluid, frightening movement Alexis Sanchez fired in Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s right wing cross to restore their lead.

And that’s how it stayed, despite chances for Scott Arfield and Andre Gray.

In front of the watching Roy Hodgson, Tom Heaton did his chances of making England’s Euro 2016 squad no harm, notably in stoppage time when he dived at Theo Walcott’s feet to stop the forward in a one-on-one.

Burnley bow out of the FA Cup, but move on to important Championship games against Sheffield Wednesday, at Hillsborough on Tuesday night, and at home to Hull City next Saturday in the hope of returning to the Emirates in the Premier League next season.
